cedar and redwood siding refinishing
Beth n Rod replied to rabela's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
I agree with Jon, this is a must strip. You will need a contractor for this job. If you really want to do some portion of this yourself, let a pro strip the wood, and prep the wood for sealing, then you can seal it. An improper strip job followed by improper prep, is a recipe for disasterous results that can do more harm to your wood. We did a job similar to this one recently, using Cabot's Australian Timber Oil: http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4120 See this thread to see the Sikkens SRD on a cedar home we did this season: http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3672 Hope these help. Jeff, Contact one of these dealers. Some of them set up rigs regularly and know the ins and outs of where to put things and why. http://www.thegrimescene.com/forums/faq.php?faq=new_faq_item800 Beth -

I'm not sure how far Ft. Mead is from Germantown... try www.mapquest.com and you should get a better idea. Can't be that far...Maryland isn't that big, although it sure is congested. Hope to see you before the season's over. Beth

Deck Spindles
Beth n Rod replied to troyt's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We use a cardboard shield, and and or brush off the excess that is on there to go over the rails where we spray (wet on wet). Go at an angle and you can hit 2 sides of the spindles at once. Beth -

A look into the future of power washing..
Beth n Rod replied to Mike's question in Residential Pressure Washing
This is a good exercise in forward thinking and planning. Many business could use this as a tool to keep themselves from becoming complacent and falling behind the curve. I myself would like to see more open cooperation amongst people of all walks of life with emphasis on respect and consideration keeping in mind that we cannot know all possible ends and giving others the benefit of the doubt that we are not inherantly bad people so we can leave judgement behind and accept each other as uniquely different but perfectly human. Ultimately, I think this will help in many facets of our lives including business. PEACE- Practice Empathy And Compassion Everyday Rod~ -

We have magnetics, and have been meaning all year to get permanent lettering on the Sprinter. Signs are better than no signs, that's for sure. I have seen people scribble down the number at a light, I have gotten asked for cards, and yes we have gotten business that way too. Beth

They did a similar thing here in Montgomery County, Maryland. We don't smoke, so we are glad about it, but it has hurt bars, restaurants and some night life, since people can go into DC or to areas that don't have the ban. Beth

Defurring Pad
Beth n Rod replied to RCBill's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
When I am using the Makita and a defelting pad, I have it set down between 1 and 2, 3 feels like my little girly shoulder will go 'pop'. I have been meaning to pick up an osborne brush all summer. Rod is really interested in them also. I'll bet they rock. Beth :cup: :dancing: :sunshine: -
Here's a PT lumber deck with redwood rail caps. It was covered with algae, and had a brown stain. We stripped it with HD-80 at 3.5 oz per gallon, and neutralized with Citralic. Beth

Algae on PT deck
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The citralic is a blend of oxylic and citric, you apply it, let dwell, and rinse. We use the black soap tip for that. The purpose of the Citralic is to neutralize the stripper. Since you washed after you applied the stripper, you simply rinse the neutralizer off whenit is finished doing it's job. Do not leave it on the wood. Rinse thoroughly. Beth -

Half stripped half not...ICK!
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The house was black, and the bottom of the vertical boards was rotting in places. They really need to replace some of the boards. We brought the rot to thier attention, they were aware of it, and said if we didn't touch it, it wouldn't fall off. Go figure. Beth -

Algae on PT deck
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Hi Denny, We have not sealed it yet. The wood is just wet in the above photos. This deck was abused by the prior company that serviced it, and the next step is actually to fully sand the horizontals. The deck is PT lumber, except the rail caps which are Redwood. The owner wants to see the beauty of the wood as it was when built. We also have some repair work to do on the staircase. I'll post photos of the next steps when we go back to do that work. Beth
