  1. Cedar Siding Restoration

I agree this is the way to go for an even application, however you do have some fairly intact sealer there, not alot of failure overall. Vertical surfaces are more challenging to strip than horizontals are. You may want to think about hiring a pro for this, or at least to strip the house and prep it, then you could seal it if you wanted to. Problem is, if you have not done something like this before, it may be difficult to get an even application on the wood. It really depends on how handy you are as to what you'll be able to accomplish. We have seen homeowners do a respectable job, and we have seen them make horrific mistakes. Research is the key, but for one person doing this you will need 4 times the amount of time it takes to do this as well, since you are new to it. You could have some sections ( you should do this in full sections I think) stripped and some just washed, but the problem would be that when you seal it, the results will not match. You'll have a coat of aged product, and a coat of fresh. This means some areas will be darker than others. One thing I will say, is to move the mulch and flowers out a good two feet from foundation or past where the roofline extends. If you notice the splash up zone next to the ground at the bottom of the cedar boards, that's where I mean... take out some of the mulch and a little dirt, and add stones and a french drain. This should help to reduce the splash up and lower level mildew growth. Hope some of this helps. Beth :cup:

Terry, it would also help us if you could post some photos of the siding. You should take Russell up on his offer and call him. He knows more about wood than most do out there, and if I recall correctly, cedar is his favorite wood. Beth

  8. rain on a newly stained deck

Everett, Thank you for sharing this. It's wonderful and helpful information. Have noticed on Ipe it is a little touchier than it used to be, but we are not using it as much on the softwoods as on the hardwoods. Have seen it flash dry as well. Not fun. What is this likely to do to our "season" where this product is concerned? In your opinion, does this shorten the season (for this product) due to these factors? Question, since all products had to lower VOC's, are you aware of any formula changes and how they effected some of the other oils? I know TWP has re-released in a new lower VOC, we applied it once and it went on pretty well. Beth
  9. That's what I would suggest. Strip, prime, and stain a solid. Once you paint, it is difficult to remove all of it so it doesn't bleed through after you apply a semi-transparent. The best success we have had with that, is if we are removing a solid stain, rather than a paint. Hope this helps. Paint - gets a solid afterwards. Solid stain - gets a let's see how the strip looks afterwards. Beth
  10. rain on a newly stained deck

Jeff, Hit it with either EFC-38 at 8 oz to the gallon, or HD-80 at 2 oz to the gallon, do a light wash, neutralize, then go back and apply a light coat. Bleach will not fix this problem. If you have any product that doesn't absorb, wipe it off. You will not need the acetone, you are applying to PT lumber. If it had been Ipe or Teak, yes...not PT. We work with Aussie Oil a fair bit. Call us if you need further help. Beth
  11. Low Ball, low balling.

I can relate with Craig in his view, but it is true what Jon has mentioned about the stigma being attached to those who we dont feel are worthy yet, but worthy of what? Trying to classify them as Jon has listed in his post doesnt help because it unfairly demeans anyone who fits the stigma regardless of the situation. If you are looking for an applicable term, "Rogue" may apply to those who havent fulfilled the obligations of their state in the business requirements regardless of their experience or knowledge. The term "Novice" according to banks, lending institutions, insurance carriers, and creditors, applies to new business venturers in the 1st 3-5 years becuase they pose a risk of faliure. After that, we are at the risk of offending those whose experience, credentials and business size are as individual as fingerprints and should not be lumped into any one category. Many state beauracracies do that to plenty of us already. As far as using these terms in conversation, I think they are useless and most likely to be considered offensive. Setting any type of standard which imposes admonishment is not a good idea. Rod~
  12. Behr gone, RS Natural Cedar

Hey Michael, Great job! Question...what did you use to strip the deck? Next question...when are you going to do their fence? ;) Sharp work! Beth
  13. Low Ball, low balling.

    And Craig scores! :dancing: Beth
  14. We just finished an ipe and cedar porch. The floor is ipe, the 4x4 supports and ceiling are cedar. We stripped it to removed an over applied and failing penofin. Attached are the clean and the sealed shots. The hand rails are trex, and so is the outer deck, although there is a western red cedar arbor out there. Beth
  15. Ipe and cedar porch

Took about....5 hours to seal the deck and wall, and two sections of fence (not in photos), two people working during that blasted heat wave. Customer hosed us down at the end. It was like being a kid in the sprinkler! Beth
  16. Ipe and cedar porch

Thanks James! Thought of you when we were working on the cedar wall. Thought to myself, Jim would love this thing! Beth
  17. Ipe and cedar porch

Thanks Ken. We do too. There is another one we just finished that I'll put a couple of pics up for. Best thing about the second one, is the cedar wall on the back. Interesting design. Beth
  18. Which to buy, X-JET or M-JET Nozzle???

X-Jet, M-5 version, hands down. More versitile tool. Beth
  19. Ipe and cedar porch

Of the floor? No. The ceiling? Yes. I have a couple more shots to post, one of the floor, one of the ceiling. The way the light acts ( pretty dark back there) the ceiling will look bright so put on your shades... Beth

  21. Getting this off my chest....

No problem. I think Rod was used to the period after each initial.... Enjoy the forums. Beth
  22. Getting this off my chest....

It might have been, but it was not written with a period between the letters. If that was what was meant, that's fine. It didn't read that way to the Admins. Beth
  23. Getting this off my chest....

Baronas, We understand your frustration here, but keep in mind that many prospective homeowners visit this site as well. Keep the referrences professional and respectful in content please. Rod~
  24. Judgement call

Run, dont walk from this one! This person is a bit unreasonable and expects more than one can deliver in my opinion. Rod~
