Hi all, I wanted to start this thread and get some feedback and others experiences involved here. We have started a ladder safety regimen for our crew and the basic instructions are: 1.) Always set the ladder up with a 70 degree pitch. A good way to tell when you have it set up right is to stand with your feet at the base of the ladder and extend your arms out straight to the ladder. If you are able to do this standing straight and your arms are fully extended then you have the ladder in the correct angle to facilitate use. If your arms are still bent as you reach out to grab the ladder, then your angle is not correct. Adjust ladder footing away from the building you are leaning it up against. If you have to bend your back or lean forward in order to grab the ladder, then the ladder is not correctly set. Adjust the ladder footing closer to the building you are leaning it up against. Adjust as needed for either case to get to the proper position. 2.) Ladder stabilizers are to be used at all times. The stabilizers help to give a wider area of balance to the upper level of the ladder rungs and limit lateral or axial movement. 3.) Two man rule: When one man is working on the ladder, the other is to be at the base of the ladder holding onto it in order to stabilize the base and watch for any changes in the ladders footing. Has anyone got anything to add or suggestions to what is already posted here? Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rod~

We're looking forward to hearing what PWNA plans on working on this year. Glad to hear the convention was a success. Beth

Henry you should be able to view attachments just fine. If you are having trouble with specific features, you should contact me offline. We ask all users to report problems to the Admin directly, this is pretty standard on all the BBS's. I'll check your settings again. The last thing you had emailed me about, was you thought you couldn't post, but clearly you can, and it was fine when I looked. So how many attendees were at the convention? What was the count? Beth
-
I hope the convention is going well for all. Curiosity is in wondering how many people are attending the convention and the trade show? We have been to the last 3 of them and they were great. Rod~

Good question. Cold water pressure washing will work for your conditions described above, but it does mean that you will need some chemical assistance to get to best results. If you have hot water, you will get far better results and use less chemicals. I would suggest that based upon the amount of cleaning of this nature that you will be doing should dictate which unit you should buy. Since you are going into a winter down under, I could also suggest hot water for that reason as well. Its up to you mate' Rod~

It is individual personal choices. Those who used to post can still do so if they choose to. The PWNA threads were moved out of view. We hope those who have chosen not to post will rejoin us. Beth

Spray bottle for staining stiles on decks?
Beth n Rod replied to JimCrossley's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It also depends on how well you clean them etc., and also what sealer you are using. Beth -

Your house prices and deck prices are both off. Give us a call if you want to drive up and learn. Beth -
Which sealers do you use? How many partial pails do you have?
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It still acknowledges the validity of the content to those who may still read this active poll. Hows the turnout at the convention? How many registered? Beth :groovy3: -
We have a variety of work, but most of our work will be wood oriented and residential. We can't guarantee what we will be doing, the schedule can change due to weather or other delays in jobs, but we are out in force mon-fri. Right now we have a very nice variety booked. Give us a call. Beth

Spray bottle for staining stiles on decks?
Beth n Rod replied to JimCrossley's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I like the ZEP spray bottles. When I have lost of detail work, I like them best, also less overspray. But for a large project, we use a Decker sprayer and occasionally we use pump ups. Beth -

Dan, Pop up for a visit and spend a couple days with Rod. Labor for learning - it's worth it. We are in Germantown, MD, and Newport News is not that far. Beth -

Wood Restoration
Beth n Rod replied to Degraffreed's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I would like to add one last item to consider about not rinsing a neutralizer. There is a term of responsibility we all have when using these chemicals to make sure that exposure is limited to the ones working with it and they are using ppe. Consider that a customer is not aware of any residue and could therefore go out or allow their children out onto this surface still containing the neutralizer and become exposed. The burns they could receive and the possiblity of ingestion is very high at this point. Oxalic acid exposure can lead to sterility in males and other health problems. Its effects go beyond superficial. It inhibits your body's ability to absorb calcium which can lead to osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). It has also been linked to kidney stones. Personally, I had a great deal of conscience about using strong chemicals because of the many dangers they present. They are harmful to our environment. Overall, the responsibility is ours since we employ these chemicals to assure that no one is exposed to them. If you decide you need to leave oxalic on a surface unattended for an extended period of time, notify the customer that no one should be allowed access to the area until you have returned to remove it. This is a best management practice we support in our work ethics and I thought it would be beneficial for others to read here. Rod~ -
It was a great thought. It should have been in homes quite a bit sooner if I am not mistaken. Hopefully some folks in driving distance can take advantage of it and go. Beth

Spray bottle for staining stiles on decks?
Beth n Rod replied to JimCrossley's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
The spray bottle is great for small areas where you dont want a great deal of over spray and light application w/o the runs...like lattice and the underside of the handrails where you have a tight area to work in, also, the corners and tight spots. Rod~ -
I would rather not speculate, but instead I would suggest contacting cleaner times to get that answer and give them your feedback. Its better to talk to the source of a problem. Mike has got a good point. This was not a good opportunity to those who would have had to make travel arrangements or even budget for this event. I think it is a great gesture on behalf of cleaner times to support the convention in this manner, just wish it could have been out sooner so more could take advantage of the offer. For our other readers, if you are within a reaonable distance to travel to columbus, take advantage of it, its a great deal and you can learn a lot! Rod~

Stain Colors
Beth n Rod replied to Russell Cissell's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Jon, We have used Wood Tux and Permachink, and no problems have resulted. Hope this helps. Had a home with the square logs this past summer, with one inch wide chink. Beth Russ, Warm Honey Gold, Western Cedar You need a Mahogany color - look at the Cabots Australian Timer oil product line for a color sample. -

Wood Restoration
Beth n Rod replied to Degraffreed's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
We always rinse. The salt crystals that can form on the surface as a result of the neutralization process can be unsightly to the homeowner. Also, it is our experience that a thoroughly rinsed surface, is just better prepped for sealing. Beth -
I read this article in the Washington Post today and thoguht it was worth sharing. Seems very similar to the problems we face in our industry coming up against others who are not professional. Beth movers.pdf
