  1. My mind is in the Gutter

Henry, Good info here, thanks. In order to avoid this type of situation, I do inform the customer of the importance of regular cleaning so that there will not be a back up of water to freeze in them. But, as you and I know, many dont listen or they forget. We install screws as a result of the current spike holes being too worn and needing a stronger attachment. I had one guy insist on them becuase the high winds we had this fall ripped some gutters right off his house and he has been plagued with gutter problems for a long time previous. Rod~
  2. Which adjustments are you wanting to make? Since we are distributors with steel eagle, I will check with the mfr. about the tips for your unit. Also, I will check to see if they have a pdf or something for literature. Stay tuned :) Rod~
  3. Paying the postmaster

hmmmm....could be a very useful URL. Also the post office will deliver postage to you.
  4. Passing the torch

Okay, I have been sitting here for a good five minutes trying to figure out how to express what it is I'm going to say. One of the things I have heard from many of you before is "how does she find the time to do it?" I'm not sure I even know the answer to that at times, other than to say you do what you have to do, when you have to do it. I have something now I need to do. For health reasons, I have decided not to continue on the board of directors for PWNA. Shortly I will be having surgery on my right hand. (and it figures I am right handed) I'm not sure how much things will change as far as how I perform daily tasks in the office, but I need to be prepared for these changes when spring arrives. In other words, I need some of my time back. I have found my time on the BOD to be challenging and rewarding, and have enjoyed working towards a variety of goals. I will continue to support the organization through moderation and committee work as I am needed, things that take less time and less physical effort for my hand. (I hate the left handed mouse and hunt and peck typing by the way) I encourage anyone who is thinking about helping PWNA, to help them. There has been quite a bit of growth these last couple of years, and this is a very exciting time for the organization but the BOD can not do it all alone. I encourage anyone who is thinking about joinging PWNA, to talk to people and learn about it, and then make your choice. It's not for everyone, but I do believe it touches both members and non-members alike. If it has touched you positively as a non-member, then why are you not a member? That is my question to you now. I also want to make it clear that this doesn't mean I am going anywhere, I just have to reprioritize. I will always be available to anyone by phone or email. (although if you email me leave a phone number as there may be times I will have to call back rather than type) I'll be online, as time and conditions allow. (please excuse my typos) Thank you all for the suport you have given me while I was on the BOD. Beth

  6. My mind is in the Gutter

You mean Rod... I don't like ladders much less roofs. ;) Thanks for the info, I'm sure Rod will make a note of it. Beth
  7. My mind is in the Gutter

We have clients that want service up to 3 times a year due to the different types of deciduous trees that grow here. We do nail setting or replacement with the new gutter screws, in addition to flushing out the system. The price is the same each time regardless of the condition. The point is that it takes the crews time to travel to and from the site, set up and pack time, ladder changes, fuel to power the machine and the vehicle, and overhead expenses. While the crews may spend less time on the job on subsequent visits, they are still climbing up on ladders and W.C. Ins. does not see fit to credit us for the shorter period of time they spend on the ladders and so on. They just make sure we pay the premiums so that they are covered in the event they need it. Besides, the customer gets a free house rinse each time which is an extra mile service. The value to the customer is that in the process, we are staving off the need for the house wash till the mildew and algae really sets in. At this point, they are glad to have us do the work according to customer feedback. Rod~
  8. OSHA Question

Here it is.... http://www.nfsi.org/ National Floor Safety institute. http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=INTERPRETATIONS&p_id=24511 http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news02/slipfall.html This all should help. Rod~
  9. Passing the torch

Howard...VERY well put! I can remember seeing news crew inthe grocery store a few years back in anticipation of snow...it was not snowing yet. People shop like mad and have no clue how to drive in the mess. I have decided that since many of these same idiots run red lights without a care in the world around here, that when it snows I would rather be home making soup or chili or something, . If I really miss the roads, I can turn on the radio and listen to how many cars were in a pile up on the beltway. Beth:groovy2:
  10. Passing the torch

Hey, you can bring snow to the round table and we can have a plowing demo... ;) Howard, are you available on Feb. 12th? Beth
  11. OSHA Question

There was a seminar in Dallas 2004 that involved slip and fall protection. I cant remember the acronym they used but I will look it up as soon as we get back. Something like the national slip and fall protection agency, standards or so on. Rod~

  13. There has been a great deal of interest in having or attending a Round Table Meeting and in order to help, I thought it would be good to list suggestions here on what to talk about in the specific regions event. I will start by suggesting the following as topics for discusion: Best Management Practices Policies and Human resource issues Suppliers and Vendors for business needs The possibilities of forming local networks or peergroups Workshops on power washer maintenance How to take your business to the next level Business plans, mission statements Forecasting and preparation Marketing/Advertising Financial strategies I am sure others have topics they are interested in as well and I invite all to post here for consideration. Shake the tree! Rod~

Also, Vendors only tend to know if they are informed about them. We have called around to vendors who were local but so far only out of state ones have taken opportunity to attend. As you said, you dont do anything half way. We have had 1 day events that last 4-6 hours and involve having a meal and conversations followed by demos and rig presentations. (everyone loves to see others ideas  ) These are pretty easy to manage and the costs are within many peoples budget. Your idea is a step or two higher and certainly sounds great. It is up to you and what you think is a managable event for you. This one sounds like you may need a few peoples help organizing it. We welcome any questions you may have! :) Rod~
  15. Initial Findings, How were yours?

Visiting the job site has been the best for us. We contact the project manager or superintendant and introduce ourselves. We provide them with a flyer listing our services, before and after photos and references. One tip to remember: These people are being pulled in many directions and they are on a tight schedule, respect this upfront by asking them if this is a good time to talk or if you can set up another time. This goes a long way and often they will speak with you while you are on site. They are used to on the spot resolutions and can make decisions based upon their conversation with you and feeling you really know your stuff. But, they do appreciate the respect for their schedule. Ken, See if you can get a speaker, for example someone from ADP to talk about Payroll. Keep the discussion open and flowing on varios topics. You can have tent cards on tables. ASk vendors to come in for demos. Ask folks to drive in thier rigs if possible, and have a contest. Some vendors will donate goods for this as prizes. Keep it to a few hours the first time. Plan a larger one if you have local interest in a second event. Does this help? You could also offer a short seminar, say on sales or marketing or something. Also many are used to a nominal fee for the meal and any other costs, such as a room rental if there is one. Give us a shout if you need help. Beth
  17. Wiring problem truck/trailer

This may sound simple but have you checked the lights themselves? Sometimes like in xmas lighting, one bulb can affect the rest. If that is not the problem, then check the wiring around the connectors and see if you have hidden breaks in the wiring. (need a second person for this to operate switches and brakes) Most connectors are molded to fit in only one way and this makes misconnections impossible (rules this out). Blown fuses could also be a factor if the circuit has been closed. Did anything get spilled on the actuator in the cab? Rod~
  18. You can use them on the indoor type furniture to strip and neutralize. I would not recommend using a pressure washer in the process though. Scrape off the old finish once it is emulsified and discard, then rinse and neutralize and rinse well. Let dry for about 2 weeks. Sand with 120-160 grit paper. Use linseed oil to moisturize the wood. Then apply your stain, then the varnish. There are drying periods between them according to label directions of the product being used. This is just a cursory overview of the process though. There may be additional steps necessary that are determined by the type of wood being restored. Maple, Cherry, Walnut and Mahogany are the most difficult. Oak, Beech, Pine (various), Cedar, Rosewood, and some softer woods are easier. Have fun Rod~
