Stripping Sikkens Cetol 1-23
Beth n Rod replied to mike c's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
You are going to need a booster and either a foaming agent or thickener to help with the verticals. ACR Products is not that far for shipping so call Tom and he'll get you some help. Rod!~ -

um, missing some major facts of cause and effect and excluding factors beyond the presidents control like republican defunding, NO to everything even if it was their idea and so forth. Blaming Obama does not dismiss the relevant facts and controversies surrounding the precipitation of republican policies of the bush era. http://politicalcorrection.org/factcheck/201107290002 http://politicalcorrection.org/factcheck/201108050002 http://politicalcorrection.org/factcheck/201108020003 This is the last post I will submit in this thread as I don't subscribe to just one side being at fault here...and the article...after following the course of events myself...I don't buy it. Unreliable pressure washer
Beth n Rod replied to RPetry's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
We have two Hydro Tek units and keep them maintained annually. As was said above, they are work horses, champions, and serve us well. We bought the first one...well Rod says it was 2002? Pretty long ago in any case. Beth -
Ipe' stain longevity
Beth n Rod replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I'm not surprised at all by the results you are getting. It is your prep. You took off the open wood, went back to new wood. If it had been pine or cedar, your sealer would have performed better. With ipe, it's like applying to new wood. Wood prep on ipe is a very fine line to walk..... Beth -
Tonyg has a balanced method of looking at things and if Americans did the same thing and had an equivalent understanding of economics, neither party would have it over another. Everyone else from what I have read seems to be taking only one side and favoring it. This is the problem. My way or the highway. That approach lacks any ability to understand the other views without bias. What everyone must understand is that one parties actions does not remain within that party. It affects an entire nation regardless of party association. What one side doesn't want/need, the other does want/need for what ever reason. But each refuses to accept the validity of the othersides arguement and we have impasse. This is a good idea to be put into the tax code: if you don't want the programs ... opt out, leave them intact for those who do and they shall bear the tax burden. But remember, once you opt out, you cannot receive any benefit from those programs. ie. unemployment and other federally funded programs. ***The other thing no one seem to be taking into account is that when government slashes spending, it affects us on the state and local level and our taxes and fees go up to continue projects in the works, and fund municipal services that many states are relying on government aid to support. Police, firefighters, road services, libraries and more WILL be affected. These are not just state funded, they rely upon federal tax dollars too. It just doesn't make sense that people don't look into things more thoroughly before jumping in and supporting a political cause. Rod!~

Burner and plumbing a buffer tank?
Beth n Rod replied to rsrs's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
The unloader will have a flow switch which turns on and off the burner. When the unit is in by-pass mode, the burner is off and the water goes to the tank w/o being heated. Rod!~ -
My Home, help decide what to do with Sikkens thats peeling
Beth n Rod replied to kentuckynet's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Once Sikkens has aged to the point of peeling, the product has darkened to the point it will not longer be matchable to the color out of the can. It will look splotchy. "put the original cetol 1 and feather it in." Sorry, but your rep is an idiot. This is near impossible for a homeowner (let alone a pro) to do with any real tangible results that would be acceptable. Trust me, there is no way you will be able to match that color once it has color shifted from UV exposure (which by the photos, it obviously has) with the contents of the can (if you have more and enough to do the job) which has not seen UV exposure. 2nd, cetol 1 is no longer available in most states so that could be another issue as well, product compatibility. I was always taught to do it right. It needs to be stripped, sanded and then re-applied. Regular maintenance should occur much sooner and never allow it to get to the point of cracking or peeling to avoid this condition again. If this is too much for either your budget or ability, select another product that is more maintenance friendly and apply it instead. Rod!~ -
My Home, help decide what to do with Sikkens thats peeling
Beth n Rod replied to kentuckynet's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
And he mentions HD-80...CONTRACTOR grade chemicals. Like I said, hire a pro. It will cost less in the long run. If you make it worse, which is easy to do, you will spend more to correct the new issues plus the older ones. NOT a DIY project. Many pro's run from Sikkens. We don't, but many do. Beth -

Welcome to TGS. Please add your signature. House rules. And be patient, most of us are out working during the day, since it is busy season. Beth p.s. that is not a DIY job, I urge you to hire a pro. -

Stripping, Sanding, Staining a deck
Beth n Rod replied to freeheel's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
You will never get enough pigment out of that wood to make a semi-transparent to look good. That is an expert job for a professional, and a nightmare for a novice. Beth -
May stop hardwoods altogether
Beth n Rod replied to plainpainter's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Hardwoods always need annual maintenance. The extent of that maintenance is what should be considered. I do not like to strip a deck where it has stayed intact vs weathered or traffic worn. Let your customers know, this is a wood that cannot hold a stain well due to it being porous vs fibrous in addition to the extractives being impermeable to stains and sealers which is why they can't penetrate well.
