Using bleach to clean wood
Beth n Rod replied to Andy Hinson's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
What is your downstream ratio? What was your dwell time? What test(s) did you do to determine if anything was on the deck besides mildew/algae? Some times, previous attempts to clean a deck were not complete and the applicator failed to ensure the wood was clean and applied the sealant anyway thereby dragging the stains of whatever was present even deeper into the wood and practically locking them in. Finding Cone Tips for Staining
Beth n Rod replied to fireandrain's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
It's always good to have a few sources for supplies. This is a good time of year to stock up on things like tips, quick connects, o-rings, swivel unions, etc..... any of those parts that need replacing from time to time that if you don't have on eon a job site, you are in trouble if it goes. We stock up from ACR Products great service, fast delivery. Also get a new gun etc, and if your hose is old get a backup. Last thing you want is a blown hose with no spare. No spare hose is like no spare tire. If it blows you are stuck. Being stuck is the pits. Things happen, try to be ready, work safely! Beth -
See? Meters matter! Always do things right, be legal, don't take cheap shortcuts that can land you in deep trouble! Beth

This has been point of contention for me...Labels. They are imposed by those who like to live within the constraints of what they believe and it excludes or precludes the possibilities of anything that falls outside of them. This is a major reason why government no longer functions effectively. Conservative, liberal, moderate, moderate conservative, or any other idiosyncratic division only serves to set themselves apart from the others. This is living in a box. Closing the doors and windows to any opposing or conflicting views in order to stay in the good graces of the 'clique'. I am one of the fortunate ones that keeps my mind free from labels and open enough to listen and consider what anyone has to say and make a determination based upon that instead of ruling it out cause it doesn't conform to the genre. Keep your labels and no I don't want to be part of anyone's 'clique' either. I enjoy being out from under the pressures of a peer group who only are looking out for themselves and not this countries citizens as a whole. Cliques, labels and polarization serves those who subscribe to it and opposes all who do not conform. I pledged my allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and not to anything that will try to divide this country from itself. Labels and idiosyncrasies do just that and I am against it cause it is not the American way. This nation was born of immigrants which means we all had roots in another land and in America, we all blended together to build what we enjoy and maintain today. Those differences helped to shape this nation making it better for all an not just the few. Don't give me any of the rhetoric about criminals either. They are simply those who do not follow and/or respect the laws of this nation and want to take all they can get without being a part of it legitimately. This is irrelevant to the labels of which I draw point upon. I ask that no one participate in these particular idiosyncratic ways and remember that we are above all...Americans. United we stand, divided we fall. Rod!~

I HATE this kind of cr*p. Just rent the stinking hydrant meter and pay for your water, be legal!!!!! Build it into the job!!! But stop making the rest of us look bad you sleazoid hack!!!!!! GGGGRRRRRR!!!! We have rented hydrant meters many times. The cost of the water is not prohibitive. There is value in obtaining water legally. One year we had the WSSC water police arrive on a job site of ours. We had a meter. He took the tag number off the meter, wrote it down and told us to have a great day. If we had not had that meter we would have been arrested. Our water police carry FIREARMS. The officer told us about all the pool companies that steal water. At that point I was not aware there were water police, but there are...at least here. Be legal. Be honest. It is not hard to do!!!! GGGGRRRRRR!!!!!! Don't be a sleazoid hack!!!! PET PEEVE!!! Hasty generalization From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Hasty generalization is a logical fallacy of faulty generalization by reaching an inductive generalization based on insufficient evidence. It commonly involves basing a broad conclusion upon the statistics of a survey of a small group that fails to sufficiently represent the whole population.[1] Its opposite fallacy is called slothful induction, or denying the logical conclusion of an inductive argument (i.e. "it was just a coincidence"). I'm an...... AMERICAN! Sure we all have to register with a party to vote, but the vote should be one of our voice, not of a party. I have voted many ways, Republican, Democrat, Independent, etc.... In each case it was because the person on the ticket best represented my voting choice. I voted as an AMERICAN, I exercised my right. Beth

Stripping of solid stain/re-staining of deck in PA questions
Beth n Rod replied to tfhello's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
I would never suggest soda blasting a deck. Sorry..... As you said, baking soda can kill plants and grass. The weight of the tarps as you add the media to it...can crush them. I would rather deluge them with lots of water.... Beth -

Should pressure washing companies be licensed???
Beth n Rod replied to Henry Bockman's question in Residential Pressure Washing
I think you are being a little sarcastic in that one, but the message is still contemptuous of the customer who tried to have faith in someone to do what they said they would do and was betrayed. Was it intentional that they went with the lowest price and for what reason? Are they being pushed to get something done by another entity? Are they having a tough time with money at this point but need to have the work done? Not everyone is a savvy business person and many have never tried to hire someone because A; their spouse did it for them and that person is no longer available, or B; They just don't understand that "not all witches are good Harry, some go as bad as you can get". There is as I understand it, no compassion for these people and they are 'fair game'. That is a shame cause I don't happen to look at these people that way and while not all are as needy, it is for the purpose of the few who are taken advantage of by 'the hacks' that create the imposing legislation upon the rest of us. Not trying to change your way of thinking, just adding my .02 as you and others can and do so freely. I believe that we can police our own industry. I believe we can set the standards for our customers to hold us to. Government laws and regulations are to protect the rights of citizens from being trampled by 'the hacks'. No it doesn't stop them from doing anything wrong or illegal, but it does prescribe a penalty if they get caught. That in itself is the advantage of those who operate within the law to direct governments attention to those who don't. Rod!~- 163 replies

Actually John....... You need a VHIC license if your work is over $1,000 and falls into a particular annual total in VA. There are three classes of licenses, A, B and C. We are licensed in VA. Beth- 163 replies

Of mean people, good Samaritans, and daily encounters….
Beth n Rod posted a question in The Club House
Of mean people, good Samaritans, and daily encounters…. By Beth Borrego 4/10/10 Every day we venture out into the world not knowing what the day will bring to us. We plow through our days mostly in a hurry, mostly without stopping to pause and consider how our actions affect others. On those days we may not always remember to carry with us what is good and what is right. Oh, we hope that we do, and we certainly think that we will if the situation presents itself, but it is far easier to remain silent in a world of crackpots and mean people who suck. Today, I met a mean person. I was out working, doing estimates and had stopped for a break in a very good neighborhood. As I walked across the parking lot to my car, I noticed a car backing out of a space. I stopped and stepped between two cars to wait, safe and out of harms way, or so I thought. The Land Rover came flying out of its space and smacked the large gray minivan parked perfectly in a row of cars behind it. The van rocked hard back and forth, back and forth, its owner nowhere in sight. As I stood there on this beautiful day and watched it happen, I realized that if I did not speak up, the driver would take off as the Land rover was already moving forward. I found my voice. ‘Hey you, stop! You just hit that car. You need to leave your information’ I cried out loudly. There were two people in the Land Rover. A short woman who was the driver, and a very tall man, about 6’4” who was her husband and who, was as mean as a snake. Oh yes, t was a very busy day in the parking lot. He absolutely flew out of his Land Rover, screaming as he came toward me. “What the hell is your problem! This is your entire fault!” In shock and disbelief I rounded on him and replied that I didn’t see how it was my fault that they hit a parked car. “Your car is sticking out too far! You didn’t park right! This is your fault!” I gently explained as he screamed in my face that it was not my car, and that I was just being a Good Samaritan, just letting them know they hit the car and needed to leave their information for the owner. “Just shut up you *****! Nobody else saw it!” he screamed even more loudly, his face filled with rage. Then the most amazing thing happened…Three distinct voices erupted as a crowd gathered. “I saw it too!” “I’m a witness!” “I saw it, and I’ll testify!” and then…..”And you owe her an apology! Don’t you talk to her like that! She did the right thing!” These three men, one elderly, one middle age, one slightly younger, all stepped up to defend me, to get between the angry man and myself, to make sure I was safe and justice was done for the owner of the car. I was shaking. I went to my car and got a pen and paper, to take the tag down. While I was gone the Land Rover took off. I felt so defeated, but then, one of my fellow Samaritans said “I stored the tag in my cell phone” he said and as he handed me his business card, I learned he was a lawyer. Do mean people really always suck? Today, what I witnessed was that sometimes the mean people in the world remind us that it is better to be strong, to be good, and to live a wholesome and caring life regardless of the vile nasty abusive ways others choose to live. Today, the good guys won. We stood together, and allowed ourselves to care for the property of another who none of us knew, but that all of us realized were wronged. We helped each other, we protected one another, and when the owner of the mini van returned, she had won because we simply didn’t allow the mean people to continue to suck. Sometimes, to peacefully coexist we have to stand up together and be good together. But the Land Rover did come back. As we stood there and speculated, about to call in the hit and run, it showed up and the woman driving got out, her husband even angrier than ever, and looking for someone to punch. She calmly explained that she wanted to leave her info. Her husband shouted over her. “This is all your fault! You are a busy body and *****. Get the hell out of here you goddamn *****! What are you going to do, call the police?” To which I calmly said ‘if I have to, yeah I will’. My three guardians were around me. Then another voice, this time from another woman coming to the lot. She asked me “should I call the police?” I don’t know where my sense of calm came from, I was a nervous wreck, but I said no it would be ok. The middle aged guardian spoke to the angry giant “hey, what are you going to do? Hit her?” he asked “yeah I should, I might!” the angry giant exclaimed. “You’re not going to lay one finger on this nice lady, if you want to take a shot it will have to be at me!” then, “and me! ”And “me too!” We all tried to tell the owner of the car that the mini van had been hit. One of my self appointed guardians decided it was time to get me out of the parking lot. “You need to leave here while he’s distracted and he doesn’t see you go” he said “and I am not leaving until you are safe. You did the right thing today. I’ll make sure you get out of the lot.” And, he did. I left knowing that it is ok to find your voice, and to use your voice. I was reminded of why I believe that angels are all around us and that above all, we are a world filled with people who are capable of not just bad things, but of good things too. As I went through the rest of my day doing estimates, I considered the magnitude of one single mean action, and how it brought so many together to do one good deed, for someone that none of us had ever seen or met. -

I certainly was not expecting the reaction I got when I called out to them to stop. Most people would have been apologetic and asked if people were ok, and started looking for pen and paper, that type of thing. It is nice to know that a man ( or men) still protect a woman in need, and that good guys finish first, not last. I would do it again. Beth -

Beth n Rod replied to RPetry's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
Exactly..... My simple rule of thumb ( I'm sure woodie will correct me if needed) 1. under coating = prep error - shame on you 2. in coating = product failure 3. on coating = mother nature the line between 2 and 3 is slim if you don't clean it off, eventually 3 will become 2, but that happens with time and degradation. Clean the deck people, clean the deck! Beth p.s. I am going to go work on my deck now...later dudes!!!! :seeya:
