I hope you're buying "inhibited hydrochloric, or muriatic". Regular muriatic will eat iron... I use a phosphoric mix that is used for descaling kitchen dishwashers...it's safe for the metals and does a really good job. Check a commercial kitchen or cleaning supplier for a source.

Engine Problem 25 horse kohler
Russ Johnson replied to VanDiesel99's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Probably got a good load of carbon in the head and muffler. Get a couple of fresh spark plugs, and the rest should straighten itself out...might want to take a peek at the air filter while you're at it. -
Pressure switch question

Owners' Manual for the parents of teenaged daughters
Russ Johnson posted a question in The Club House
Teenager Daughter Owner's Manual Instructions for all those with teenage daughters or daughters who think they are teenagers or who will eventually be teenagers. Teenager Owner's Manual Congratulations! You are now the proud new owner of a teenaged daughter. Please read this manual carefully, as it describes the maintenance of your new daughter, and answers important questions about your warranty (which does NOT include the right to return the product to the factory for a full refund.) IF YOU FEEL YOU HAVE RECEIVED YOUR TEENAGER IN ERROR: To determine whether you were supposed to receive a teenaged girl, please examine your new daughter carefully. Does she: (a) look very similar to your original daughter, only with more makeup and less clothing? (b) refuse to acknowledge your existence on the planet Earth (except when requesting money)? © Sleep in a burrow of dirty laundry? If any of these are true, you have received the correct item. Nice try, though. BREAK-IN PERIOD: When you first receive your teenaged daughter, you will initially experience a high level of discomfort. Gradually, this discomfort will subside, and you will merely feel traumatized. This is the "Break-In Period," during which you are becoming accustomed to certain behaviours that will cause you concern, anxiety, and stress. Once you have adapted to these behaviours, your teenager will start acting even worse. ACTIVATION: To activate your teenaged daughter, simply place her in the vicinity of a telephone or Instant Messanger. No further programming is required. SHUTDOWN: Several hours after activation, you may desire to shut down your teenaged daughter. There is no way to do this. CLEANING YOUR TEENAGED DAUGHTER: Having a teenaged daughter means learning the difference between the words "clean" and "neat." Teenaged daughters are very clean, because they take frequent showers that last more than an hour. They will scrub themselves with expensive, fragrant soaps which you must purchase for them because like I'm sure I'm going to use like the same kind of soap my mom and dad use. When they have completely drained the hot-water tank, they will step out and wrap themselves in every towel in the bathroom, which they will subsequently strew throughout the house. If you ask them to pick up the towels, you are confusing "clean" with "neat." Teenagers are very busy and do not have time to be neat. They expect others to pick up after them. These others are called "parents." FEEDING YOUR TEENAGED DAUGHTER: Your teenaged daughter requires regular meals, which must be purchased for her at restaurants because she detests everything you eat because it is like so disgusting. She does not want you to accompany her to these restaurants, because some people might see you and like I'm sure I want my friends to see me eating dinner with my parents. Either order take-out food or just give her the money, preferably both. If you order pizza, never answer the doorbell because the delivery boy might see you and ohmigod he is so hot. Yes, your daughter's idea of an attractive man is the pizza boy. CLOTHING YOUR TEENAGED DAUGHTER: Retailers make millions of dollars a year selling stylish and frankly sensible clothing which will look adorable on your daughter. If you enjoy shopping, you will love the vast selections which are available to you. Unfortunately, your teenaged daughter wants to dress like a lap dancer. You may be able to coerce her into putting on a cute outfit before leaving the house, but by the time she walks in the schoolhouse door, she will be wearing something entirely different. OTHER MAINTENANCE: Teenaged daughters require one of two levels of maintenance: "High," and "Ultra High." Your daughter is "Ultra High." This means that whatever you do won't be enough and whatever you try won't work. WARRANTY: This product is not without defect because she has your genes, for heaven's sake. If you think this is not fair, talk to your parents, who think it is hilarious. Your teenaged daughter will remain a teenager for as long as it takes for her to become a woman, which in her opinion has already happened and as far as you are concerned never really will. If you are dissatisfied with your teenaged daughter, well, what did you expect? In any event, your warranty does not give you your little girl back under any circumstances, except that deep down she's actually still there - you just have to look for her. -
Building a belt drive machine
Russ Johnson replied to Chris S's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Do you carry the ready made belt drive bases? Yes, do you want wheels or skid mount? Belt alignment and size is very important. Please feel free to call me with the pump model you plan to use, size of any pulleys you may have, and desired operating specs, and we'll get it figured out. wouldn't I have t get a new 1 1/8" gear box also? Not necessarily...Honda and Vanguard 18's are available with 1" shafts. -
Whats the best way to get pump off
Russ Johnson replied to jetstream1's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Some pumps have a set screw down in the flange..is it loose? The hollow pump shafts can sometimes be a real booger to get apart. I have even resorted to breaking the flange to get to the shaft to heat it. Usually after heating the shaft, it's best to replace the oil seals in the engine and pump. And use Never Sieze when you reassemble to keep this from happening again. -
Building a belt drive machine
Russ Johnson replied to Chris S's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Best bet...buy a ready made belt drive base and belt guard. Or...gear drive it. -
Does that machine have a high limit switch? Sometimes when they get too hot, they drop out and forget to reset.

What brand of engine? Most, if not all engines, have fuel shut offs. Bring it on up...we'll take a look at it.

You are both quite welcome.

hydraulic driven pumps
Russ Johnson replied to splashandash's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
Personal opinion...you're better off building a base plate and belt driving them. -
Steve, downstream still puts the chems through the hose/gun/wand. Any possibility of debris in the ball/seat area? Sounds like a cartridge type valve. If sand or mulch or whatever gets in the hose or gun, the first smallest stop is the gun valve. Sometimes you can push the ball off the seat with a center punch or what have you and dislodge any trash in the valve.

As long as it's water tight and will take a 4,000 psi test, that's all it needs to be. Welding coils isn't difficult for someone who welds. I like to use an acetylene torch to weld coils. You can flow and massage the metal into the whole crack.

The Whirl A Way brand is really a decent cleaner. IMO, the greaseable bearing is a plus. There's no way to maintain the sealed bearings on the other brands. I look it like gas engines and electric motors. Gas engines have bearings in an oil bath that gets changed regularly, while most motors use sealed bearings that have to be changed once they go bad.

Kyle, do not waste your money on that unit. I do warranty service for North Star here in Louisville. I have seen one of these three times for unrelated problems. After I fixed it the third time, the man put it on ebay. I can price you a decent 120 volt machine if you'd like. -

rectifier, blowing fuse!!!!!
Russ Johnson replied to hydrtequniclychallanged's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
The "single strand" wire coming from the thermostat is actually the capillary tube that senses temperature. It can't be replaced without replacing the whole thermostat because it is permanently attached and must stay that way. The coating coming off it won't hurt a thing. BTW, welcome to the board. -
rectifier, blowing fuse!!!!!
Russ Johnson replied to hydrtequniclychallanged's topic in Tools, Equipment & Basic Maintenance
The regulator that you reference will have nothing to do with blown fuses. The problem will be in the burner components or wiring. Perhaps the burner motor is locked up due to it being bad or your fuel pump going bad. It could also be the transformer. Possibly the control solenoid that starts the burner may have a short. Or you could just have a wire rubbed through somewhere.
