  1. Jim, woodcare is great but the rain does suck! I was praying for a drought this year, started right in April now this the long range forecast (10 day) up here in NE does not bode well for woodies, I don't think we are going to dry out for a while. Time to get serious with playing the lottery or move to Texas, I just read that Shane can't handle all the decks there by himself! Go figure.

  2. It would be nice if the stain would last 24 months looking perfect the whole time, and then 1 day later, fail totally. It just doesn't work that way, and most of us know that. Yes, it is important to keep customers happy - to an extent. Lines must be clearly drawn.

I agree with what every one has already said but I would like to add a comment. When my customers ask me how long the stain will last I mention all of the above comments made by you, I also tell them that the deck is not going to look this good next year and use an Example like if you park a new car in your driveway and don't even use it what will it look like in a year, not like it did new. I also ask them what is most important to them having the wood protected or aesthetics (the look) after staining their wood will be protected for 2 years but it will not look as good as it does now and they will determine their own maintenance schedule based on their answer. However I also will go an do a free wash & stain to a good customer if there is a problem I determine is not natures or my customers fault. Gotta keep some of em happy"

  3. Thanks for the advice. Aplus, Ken and Rod I agree with you all too! Yeah Behr bites I did not put the Behr on the deck, it is of course a homeowner special. They did it in the past and don't ever want to do the work again. The other Behr decks I have seen in the woods I do bid strip and recoat. Of course for the price I quote most people will always ask if it can just be recoated. I did look on the can and it says nothing on the maintenance of the product soooo... I thought I could get some help here and I did. Joe

  4. I seem to be getting a lot of calls this year from people that have put "Behr Deck Plus" on there decks and are looking for someone to maintain these decks. My question is this Can Behr Deck Plus be washed and recoated (what will it look like) or "DOES It need to be stripped? What will convince the customer that I do not speak with fork tongue when I inform them of what needs to be done? Thanks in advance for any help I may receive on these questions. Joe

  5. Thanks for the info James. I will be in touch. Henry ABR does smell one of the biggest complaints about it. Ritz, are you redoing the whole deck every 2 years rails and all for the 60%? A good example of money being spent by the homeowner yearly for maintenance is mulch! $200-$300 per yr. easy per home Deck maint. sounds like a good deal when they think about that. Joe

  6. Jim, are to referring to the ABR Natural Seal Wood Preservative for the damp sealing? I also started doing maint. this year using Abr products. How long between maint. coats on the railings are you getting with the ABR products? Do you use the Pre Finish system? Thanks Joe

One more question Jim What do customers remember most, the quality of your work or the bird on your head? Reminds me of Cal Worthington and his dog Spot. A California auto dealer that did TV spots with a variety of animals from birds to elephants. Hi, I'm Cal Worthington and this is my dog Spot! Got my attention!
