  1. Rick the mahogany deck looks great. Is that RS Medium Red or do you make a blend? I love variation of the wood tones in mahogany and my customer's eventually do also. When you do a deck that looks like the one you did, you can say to the customer while smiling Kinda looks like mahogany, doesn't it?
  2. Restora

Do you have to remove the shutters from the house to restore them?
  3. Has anyone ever had to deal with mold in there homes? I have a small problem in a damp basement and I have been trying to find a product I can use myself to clean and kill the mold so I do not have to hire someone and pay the big bucks. Any suggestions or Info would be greatly appreiciated.
  4. thanks Jarrod. Could someone that works with TWP give me some insight on the maintenance of a TWP finished deck. I have never worked with it and I have a new customer that is looking for maint. Can you just wash and recoat or does it have to be stripped everytime you do maintenance??? And what would you wash it with?? This just for the flats
  5. Jarrod, How easy is the TWP to maintain? Can it just be washed lightly and recoated? I just looked at a deck that has TWP gold on it and the customer wants the flats recoated. She said it's been 2yrs, the deck still looks great.
  6. Fuzzies on Cedar Poll

Jim what brand of floor buffer is the "Defurno " that you use?
  7. I'm with Rick, Phillip & Scott. It's not always about the money! Good going guys!
  8. Jim, woodcare is great but the rain does suck! I was praying for a drought this year, started right in April now this the long range forecast (10 day) up here in NE does not bode well for woodies, I don't think we are going to dry out for a while. Time to get serious with playing the lottery or move to Texas, I just read that Shane can't handle all the decks there by himself! Go figure.
  9. I agree with what every one has already said but I would like to add a comment. When my customers ask me how long the stain will last I mention all of the above comments made by you, I also tell them that the deck is not going to look this good next year and use an Example like if you park a new car in your driveway and don't even use it what will it look like in a year, not like it did new. I also ask them what is most important to them having the wood protected or aesthetics (the look) after staining their wood will be protected for 2 years but it will not look as good as it does now and they will determine their own maintenance schedule based on their answer. However I also will go an do a free wash & stain to a good customer if there is a problem I determine is not natures or my customers fault. Gotta keep some of em happy"
  10. (Age is factor number one with regard to using Bleachology. This could be learned in Lab 101 Bleachyastrics. Taught by the " Bleach Boy's" Shane and DJ ( diamond jim) or James. ) And your theme song would be?
  11. Readyseal Gold

Jim what type of wood would you use that blend on? Cedar?

  15. I seem to be getting a lot of calls this year from people that have put "Behr Deck Plus" on there decks and are looking for someone to maintain these decks. My question is this Can Behr Deck Plus be washed and recoated (what will it look like) or "DOES It need to be stripped? What will convince the customer that I do not speak with fork tongue when I inform them of what needs to be done? Thanks in advance for any help I may receive on these questions. Joe
  16. Thanks for the advice. Aplus, Ken and Rod I agree with you all too! Yeah Behr bites I did not put the Behr on the deck, it is of course a homeowner special. They did it in the past and don't ever want to do the work again. The other Behr decks I have seen in the woods I do bid strip and recoat. Of course for the price I quote most people will always ask if it can just be recoated. I did look on the can and it says nothing on the maintenance of the product soooo... I thought I could get some help here and I did. Joe
  17. Thanks Rod If there is not a mildew problem can the deck just be recoated with the same product and color? How will it blend with the old stain? Joe
  18. I agree with Jim that these products are aimed at the Do It Your Selfers homeowner. I tend to think one of their marketing points will to be to show it as an easier/quicker alternative deck staining system, and if the customer perceives it as simpler and can do it themselves in one day. Are we seeing Cabot's developing any contractor only products?
  19. Russell, when you say warn customers of possible pool draining, filter removal, etc. when using HD-80, when would I know if that had to be done? How much rinse water entering a pool is too much? thanks Joe
  20. Rain in New England

New England, I'm with Jim, stained 1 deck in the last 13 days, I have 14 decks ready to finish and rain is forecast for the next 3 days. And now I am getting the calls when are you going do start my deck? My answer is I can start it right away. The question these days is when am I going to be able to finish your deck? Beautiful weekend though! What about those Red Sox! Joe
  21. SH DeckScapes

Thanks for the info James. I will be in touch. Henry ABR does smell one of the biggest complaints about it. Ritz, are you redoing the whole deck every 2 years rails and all for the 60%? A good example of money being spent by the homeowner yearly for maintenance is mulch! $200-$300 per yr. easy per home Deck maint. sounds like a good deal when they think about that. Joe
  22. Jim any particular brand or flavor of pizza work better than another? just curious. Joe
  23. SH DeckScapes

Jim, are to referring to the ABR Natural Seal Wood Preservative for the damp sealing? I also started doing maint. this year using Abr products. How long between maint. coats on the railings are you getting with the ABR products? Do you use the Pre Finish system? Thanks Joe One more question Jim What do customers remember most, the quality of your work or the bird on your head? Reminds me of Cal Worthington and his dog Spot. A California auto dealer that did TV spots with a variety of animals from birds to elephants. Hi, I'm Cal Worthington and this is my dog Spot! Got my attention!
  24. Waiting for Springtime!

In New England today landscape trucks are in the neighborhoods with snowplows attached and the birds are singing we thought it was spring but it does not seem like it with 8 - 14 inches of snow in the forecast. Oh Well! Better days are coming!
