0 offduty 25 Report post Posted December 16, 2009 Horse power and cubic inch are not equal. Horsepower in a particular enginne can be gained or lowered by adjusting fuel and air. You want an engine that has plenty of horsepower "left in it" when it is running at it's advertised horsepower. An 18hp Honda is screaming, running wide open to deliver it's rated horsepower. A kohler just purrs along with plenty left to spare. The torque is much better on the kohler. 13 hp honda is the best small engine on the market. After that, they make junk. 0 Jerry 24 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 I totally agree with OffDuty-Will.. Did you know, the GX series line of engines that put Honda on the map is now over 30 years old !?? Our service dept. has proof they "don't make-'em like they used to" and with the way we've been treated by their customer service dept.. I have NOTHING good to say about 'em. We "can" (reluctantly) build systems with the Honda engines, but. we seriously recommend others.. Kohler and B&S Vanguard are longer-term-lower-cost.. less expensive parts, easier access to parts, ..and of course.. more reliable horsepower. and to more directly answer yer Q.. We love Kohler V-twins.. they always have the guts to perform. The ONLY trouble we've had centers around the "difficult to troubleshoot" ingition system.. that is, more difficult than a Briggs, since you're guessing until you pay someone with the special tester to diagnose the HV or spark-advance as the problem.. It's just unessesary downtime. Eh? Call or e-mail any question. We’re glad to help ! 0 acegot 14 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 Ive never had any problems with both my 18 Briggs Vanguards, or my 20 Kohler or my 13 honda. Ive been told by Techs. to stay away from the larger Hondas for the last 10 years.
0 cleanhoods 43 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 I think the key is some of the motors need more attention then others but all in all if you give your motors the attention it needs they will last a very long time. The main thing is fresh oil and tune ups, plus the most important less down time they like running alot to stay alive longer. 0 Mike B. 14 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 I just upgraded my ten year old Honda 18 hp ts pump to a 24 hp Honda tsf2021. In ten years I replaced the left ignition coil twice, other than preventive maintenance-oil & filter, air filters I have never had an issue. This past year the engine started to smoke when first started. I love Honda's for their reliability, I worked on Honda's and Acura for 23 years, I was a certified ASE master tech Honda/Acura master tech. I really enjoyed test driving the NSX awesome car! I have heard there are some issues with the new hondas, I guess I'll find out with the new 24hp.
