seymour 14 Report post Posted April 11, 2011 Hello All: Long time lurker, first time poster. The information here is wonderful and I have really learned a lot so far. The attached photos are of my deck. I will be over the course of the springs stripping and restaining it. Planning to use a Armstrong Clark or Ready seal.. Probably AC Super Cedar. Stripping would be done with HC-80 followed by a brightening of citralic, sand, EFC-38 and maybe another brightening depending how it come out, then stain (I am going to test and area to see if I need the HC-80 first). Plan on tarping and water bagging the heck out of the koi pond for protection. My 1st question is what would you charge approximately for these two decks (approximately just for comparison to what I spend). Details are as follows: Main Deck 1899 sqft., 168 lft rails, 4 steps 8'6" wide, 5 steps 3' wide, 4 steps 6'-6" wide, pergola. 2nd deck (not in photos) 124 sq.ft, 1 level, 21'6" rails same style as main deck. Both decks are above ground. Main deck is about 30 off the ground at its highest point, 2nd deck is contant 10' off the ground. Both decks were previously stained with Cabots and Penofin (Penofin applied without stripping)--- (what can I say I did it before I found you guys) 2nd question is any comments on the stripping/ staining process I mentioned 3rd question is I calculate I will need 20 gallons of AC, 12# of HC-80, 10# EFS-38 and 15# Citralic if smaple area proves I need to do everything..... does this seem right? Thanks for your help and any comments

James 625 Report post Posted April 11, 2011 Koi pond is a major consideration for the whole project. $6 to 7.5k. What kind of wood?
seymour 14 Report post Posted April 11, 2011 Thanks, one thing I forgot to mention the entire deck is clear white cedar so the dark stain color really doesn't do it justice.
James 625 Report post Posted April 11, 2011 clear white cedar is a pain in the arm pit. how old is the wood
seymour 14 Report post Posted April 11, 2011 It was built in 1997-1998 ~ 13 years. Last stained with Penofin semi-trans about 2 years ago (no strip), and stained about 3-4 years before that with a Cabot semi-trans.
