Oil based or water based...how to tell the difference

Is there a way or a test to tell whether or not the solid stain you are looking at is a water based or oil based stain?

I'm assuming if it is oil the test spot will break down, if it is acrylic it won't ....

It works best on acrylic stains which are water-based.
