decks/Different wood

Question

....I rarely do decks anymore, but I've noticed a trend over the last five yrs. or so....these decks all use different kinds of wood. For instance, Paul in ATL posts a few pics of his Ipe jobs, but the have mahogany rails, cedar posts, and pine joists. Are the random mixes of wood for appearance reasons, or something else?? I can see if building an Ipe floor, you might use something easier on the rails, especially if you are painting them. What is the reason behind this?

We see quite a bit of it here too, and the reasons vary...

One reason we hear, is that people wanted the Ipe flooring, but went with PT on the verticals to save money. Another common one here is Ipe and Cedar, because the two woods both looks so nice together. We have seen this mixture fairly often. We also get PT mixed with Redwood, and PT mixed with Cedar. Have seen PT floors with Cedar rails, and PT floors with Redwood rails. Also Saw Ipe/Cedar and Oak.

Builders are being creative to sell upscale jobs, and give decks new looks. At least in the DC Metro area that is what we are seeing.

Hey Jon,

I think Beth nailed it. It is money and looks.

Hey I did a deck today that the couple have a rental home in NC. I believe Brisson City (sp ??). Let me know if you are near there. They need the deck cleaned and stained. They wanted me to go up there and do it. I passed. Too much work here. Great and wonderful people.

Let me know.
