Man, that's a bummer! I can expect that from the candy bar makers and so forth, it is actually common to do that. You reduce the size with out increasing the price, then you increase the price slightly. You get two increases that way, one in reduced costs, the other in consumer spending. But not the Girl Scouts.....bummer.... Beth

Should we be supporting new startups?
Beth n Rod replied to plainpainter's topic in Business Topics & Tips
This economy will be the test for many companies new and old alike. Attrition will be high and in the process new companies will spring up to fill the void. It is a cycle but in times like these I have to wonder whether Dan has somewhat of a point from a humanitarian perspective albeit his approach was from an act of self preservation. When times are good it didn't seem to be a bad idea to encourage new companies and help them so that when they did the work, it was on par with the rest, making the industry look better as a whole. But now I have to stand back and ask the question: Should we be doing this now? We could be encouraging people into bankruptcy because a new business venture is risky to begin with. The potential for failure is higher because of the lack of consumer spending making it tough for established and experienced businesses to keep themselves busy. We should all accept the facts that hacks will spring up and disappear like cherry blossoms leaving a mess for us to clean up but in the mean time, what should our focus be? Networking is positive in the aspect of gaining and sharing ideas that help our business but is there a line? I know that pricing and anything related to the books is already held close to the chest. 'How to' information is already available in many forums and internet archives that being tight lipped will only encourage more use of a free search feature. Some are too lazy to use it, while others don't know about it. Considering the amount of information available, I associate it with those who complain about not being able to afford an education yet they have a public library available with all the books on the subject that can be checked out for free! An opportunity missed. In light of these questions, is there an ethical question here that asks us to warn instead? Rod!~ -

I agree with Tony 100%. You can be bitten by new contractors OR those who have been in business a while. In the past I was VERY open to sharing info, but I have scaled back. There is tons of info on here, and when people want to search and study, that's great. But this year, many demographic areas are hard hit and we all have to look out for our own businesses. I have known Tony for many years, and he is one of the most professional and business minded people I know. His sentiments and Dan's (plainpainter) are not that far off. They are both saying be careful who or how much you help. One last note - I know it is cabin fever season, I get that. I know the economy is down. Let's keep it professional. Beth :cup: -

:lol:What, you have not seen milk go from $2.50 a gallon to $4.50 a gallon in like 2 years? I need to shop where you shop! Prices on groceries began to rise about a year after 9/11 when gas went up, and they have been going up since, especially the last two years. No more .33 cents a can tuna! Beth  -
Cool beans dude! Did she pinch you to make sure your weren't dreamin? Rod!~

Belt vs Direct drive: Belt drive has less vibration imposed upon the pump. It also has a small drop in horsepower due to the transfer of power through the belt. Direct drive delivers 100% of the power directly to the pump but also creates more vibration which in some circles is thought to shorten the life of the pump. While no significant proof is available to substantiate this, it is still an investment decision. Heat is also of concern due to the proximity of the pump to the engine. Either drive system will work well for the purpose. Rod!~

I agree with you Rick. Beth -
Either are good starter units. I bought a couple of HD units in the past w 3400psi/4gpm capacity and they worked fine for a couple of years. I then upgraded to skid units which out perform them and have better quality components. Rod!~

Oh! One other thing....get a small dish of candy or a basket, and hold while you are on the edge of the booth near the isle. Stick business cards in with it. When kids go by let them see the candy. They will want a piece, and you can jokingly say yes you may and I have something for mom/dad too, and hand them a card, strike up a conversation. The parents have a few minutes while the kid has candy. Works like a charm! Beth p.s. some kids are allergic to nuts, so stay away for those candies.

Higher risk for asthma due to proximity to cleaning chemicals
Beth n Rod posted a topic in Chemicals & Safety
Nurses at higher risk for asthma due to proximity to cleaning chemicals, study finds - McKnight's Long Term Care News Nurses who are frequently exposed to cleaning chemicals are at a significantly higher risk of developing asthma than other healthcare workers, according to a recent report. Nurses who are routinely exposed to disinfectants and other cleaning products are 72% more likely to develop asthma than healthcare workers in other fields, and 57% more likely to report asthma-like symptoms, the report finds. Likewise, nurses who regularly clean medical instruments are 67% more likely to develop asthma. Using patient care-related solvents and glues increases asthma likelihood by 51% among nurses. Common cleaning products nurses are exposed to include topical cleansers for cleaning a patient's skin, glutaraldehyde for cold sterilization of medical instruments and common cleansers such as bleach, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Switching to "green chemicals" and taking extra precaution could help reduce the risk of developing asthma, say report authors. Their research appears in the online journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. -
I would put the banner across the back of the pipe and drape, so people coming down the isle can see it clearly. If it is in front of the table, it will be blocked from view by people in front of it, and also people look up for signs, not so much down. Get a cheap flame retardant table cloth in one of your company colors to compliment the banner above. Center the monitor on the table, run the show in a loop. Ask the show people if attendees are provided with tear cards at sign in, which have their info and people will gladly give you. People are not wild about filling things out, be prepared to write FOR them. Make sure your table is not so cluttered that it looks untouched. Beth :cup:

One other thing I want to say in this thread, and I do not mean anything bad at all by it, so please guys don't jump on my back.... I wish Bob all the best, and I think this will end up being good for his business. I remember when Steve Rowlette had a forum called The cleaner Network, and it had a free for all style as well, and it was a vendor site...and it had a similar fate. All the best to Bob! Beth
