Deck restoration project: some ?s...
Beth n Rod replied to wjr18.pa's topic in DIY'ers - Ask The Pro's
There is nothing wrong with asking questions here. Many are willing to help, some more than others... and this time of year many are strapped for time. You are wise to do your research. It will yield you a better end result. It can be don't just make sure you don't stray from the steps prescribed, be very particular about following them, and take the time needed to do it (no skipping steps!) Make sure you stop at logical stopping points and not in the middle of a step - for example, NEVER leave stripper on a deck until tomorrow. Always finish the task. Always wear the dreaded PPE. Wear the respirator around chems. Wear the gloves. Wear the eye protection and the PVC on hot days. Deck stripping can be hazardous, and I am not trying to scare you - but you really don't want a trip to the ER due to a burn or a lung full. Be safe on your adventure! :) The "mom" in me has spoken... ;) Beth p.s. without seeing more of the floor, based upon the rails - I think the deck is PT lumber (pine) -
We have those here. They are good. Do you have Chicken Out in AZ? We have that too. (I like Boston Market better) Beth

Contractor Events needs your help
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Industry News & Events
As many shots of the backs of heads as I have to be honest I'm not worried about it. Everyone takes still photos. How many have I taken on vacation, or had taken of me if I was in view? Who knows. How many at round tables or conventions? Same thing. Video I can see, a few still of a crowd where you can't make out all the faces, personally I don't see the big deal. Beth -

I love this kind of story! Kudos to both Russ, for providing a sample that could be used for a whole job, and to Rick for being able to help a young couple who might otherwise have had to forgo the service this year. This is very cool!!! Beth -

I know I sent Celeste photos from events as far back as 2002. I nearly blew up her mailbox! I had shots from various events in: MD PA NC GA NJ Anyone with photos or videos, or who has attended an event and wants to share an experience via testimonial should contact Celeste. I know many of us carry a camera to these events, now is the time to share. :) Come on and dig out your pics! Beth -
Hood were the nastiest things we have done I think (we no longer do them). We once cleaned a basement in a building that had septic overflow....NASTY! Beth

Rod used Eacochem's product with success. We don't do much of this at all, but it worked when we needed it to. Beth

Pics of deck restoration to begin soon

Depends on the lattice. Cheap lattice can break. The good - expensive, stronger lattice may hold up. When in doubt, use a brush to agitate the surface, and rinse, use the white tip and stay back. You can also use the soap tip. If the lattice is loose, don't hit it with the power washer. Some lattice is put together with staples, some with glue. Have seen both. If your lattice won't survive the process, consider replacing it. Sometimes that is easier.... Beth -

What are you really paying for gas?
Beth n Rod replied to Beth n Rod's topic in Business Topics & Tips
A friend of mine sent it to me, and given how much fuel we all consume, I thought it was worth sharing. Nobody wants to get that kind of surprise. Diesel here is $5.09!!! Gas is not much better... Beth -
Ipe headache
Beth n Rod replied to Mountain View's question in Wood Cleaning & Restoration - Decks, Fences, etc.
I am more inclined to agree with Rick. We tell our customers 6 months to a year. If they want it done right away, they should expect the finish to have a shorter life. That is the end result. Teak is another one that wears better if you let it weather. But, I do get that Russ wants to sell that extra pail.... ;) No harm in that either... Beth -
What about a standard house wash mix that has bleach in it? Beth

Keep in mind that it is not demographically specific. It is a range and depending upon your area your price may vary. Remember, Not all areas of the country are capable of paying top dollar. This pricing guide was very helpful to our company in the beginning. It gave us a reference and with a little research on our end, we found where others were pricing and did accordingly. Let's not make something out of nothing for the sake of balking. Take it for what it is, information. Rod!~ -
