deck with Olympic stain

Question

This deck was with the Playset in st. Pete.

I goofed on this one.

After stripping the playset, the deck had lots of mildew on it. I asked HO if she wanted it cleaned off. Light bleach and lightly washed, but a little of the color came off. Knowing up front it needed to be refinished, because lots of bare areas already, I was planning on writing an estimate for future maintenance restain. The Husband called me that night and said I took off most of the old stain! And that I should restain it at cost!

Now you'd assume he knew the condition before hand, but I was left with no room to argue and agreed to re stain with the original Olympic semi. It really turned out great and I was able to at least cover my helpers labor and make a little.

Lesson learned the hard way!

That's an easy masking job.....at least I think it is.

Get a roll of pre-taped plastic. (9 foot roll)

Cut a piece big enough to go around the post.

Pre-tape from the top down (suggesting 6 feet high)

Blue tape at the bottom, leaving half the blue tape bare to tuck into.

Unfold pre-taped plastic pulling down gently and tucking into the blue tape seam, press closed.

Run a seam of blue tape up the opening in the plastic.

Your columns are now masked.

Rock on that wood!

That one was hand brushed. Ive learned that even though it takes 2-3 times longer to brush instead of spray, the taping and tarping takes twice as long as the spraying so the time savings on a small deck is minimal.
