I'm excited! I have been asked to speak at the Ceta/Issa joint convention in Orlando in November! The planner has been following my marketing book chapter by chapter in Cleaner Times. I am over the moon!

I would like to add that there are situations and conditions one needs to consider when recommending a either water or oil based.

Taking into account these 'environmental' factors will help you to avoid some problems but not all.

Hottubs on a deck for example. This could lead to high mildew growth on many oil based products and make it harder to clean and maintain,
whereas an acrylic would fair better, be easier to clean and maintain and last longer.

North facing decks are a great candidate for acrylics.
South facing decks are going to require oils.

    Why?
Well, northern facing decks tend to be more shaded and have a higher probability of mildew growth. Acrylics can perform better and last longer in these situations which equates
to longer intervals between maintenance (except for light cleaning by the h.o.)

Oil based products are a benefit for the sun baked decks and while they perform differently according to formulation, they are easier to maintain than acrylics which would peel and flake
in these conditions, especially on the floors.  Acrylics work great on the rails, but oil is better on the floors. This is another way to save the customer on maintenance. Limit their maintenance to the horizontals and make the verticals last longer.

This of course equates to a 2-tone price application but in the long run, it is worth it for the customer and the deck.

Tim , I take care of a lot of furniture . Teak , cedar , pt, redwood, something that begins with a J. All furniture that ends up with people like us has gotten out of control and sticky . Over application of product is the biggest issue. So knowing what you put on and how to care for the finish is the biggest issue with outdoor furniture and when to start over again.
Last year I did about 20 pieces of teak at the end of the year as a trial for he next 20 pieces in spring ( I think more). The tables could not be extended and the chairs couldn't be sat on when the temps hit 90. What a freaking mess but they new it . It went beyond there painter, local hardware store , paint store, handy man, advice from the product they put on,. The estate manager went to a dinner at one of my clients and ate / sat on the furniture I have cared for the last ten years. What a great new client I have and estate to work on . All because of something that couldn't be sat on ! Who wood of thunk ?
    With furniture less is best....
What ever is used don't over apply . Wipe off anything that doesn't sink in in 30 minutes . Don't allow much on the undersides at all . Just enhance the wood. With furniture the first finish and when to do the second finish is the trickiest . You cannot treat outside furniture like inside furniture.

Welcome to TGS. Please fill in your signature. And now that we have that little housekeeping detail out of the way, huge props on the furniture. BEAUTIFUL.
Any of the moisturizing oils will work. We have used alot of Armstrong Clark, but we also have clients who insist on Penofin's rosewood oil.

GLBrown, Welcome, and please add your signature. House rules.

Actually, oils will penetrate deeper that a water based product will, but having said that, there remain when to use what and the question of durability.
These are not cookie cutter answers.

I am too Beth. A storm is brewing here as well snowed a little yesterday and the heavy snow comimg today through thursday the worse being Wednesday. they say 10 inches..lol.I am just ready for warm season, man winter costs me at least an hour more of work considering you have to drain all hoses and treat machine every job. Plus those cold nights just suck sometimes especially when things go wrong. Plus winter is a different process of cleaning considering you are forming an ice rink somewhere. Anyhow all be safe think first.

Setting new goals. Make sure trucks are ready to go and going over marketing. Keep networking. Also hiring more people and making sure to keep sales going. Should be another good year as soon as it stops snowing. Look into other ways to make more money.

We work on marketing in the dead of the winter such as now and we set goals for this upcoming year. I also tweak some of the equipment to get everything ready to roll once it's warm enough and the phone takes off.

I couldn't talk my neighbor out of using Restore completely, but was able to at least get her to test it on some wood lawn chairs first.  After doing the chairs, she finally agreed on what I was trying to tell her.  It is a terrible product plus looks awful, and like Beth said "If the coating is not permeable.....RUN."

All of these companies keep trying to develop a product that can beat Mother Nature.  The fact is Mother Nature will eventually win.
