  2. Welcome the world of Wood Forensics 101. Looks to me like remnants of the previous product in the wood affecting the applied finish. Some products have components which do not easily strip by conventional means. Products which contain silicone and teflon can leave behind their constituents that react badly to different products other than themselves giving your the result you are seeing. You may need to strip it all back to bare wood again making sure you get what is below the surface. This will cause the wood to fuzz up a bit but in the end you will have a better result. Rod!~

Yuck. Got pics? Sound like an expensive fix to me. Beth

  9. sap

Boards with sap veins will always be problematic, until the vein depletes what is in the vein as it shrinks. It may then stop but may start again the next time it is cleaned and sealed. Heat may also cause it to ooze. My suggestion - replace it. Removing sap to keep a board is a pain in the rear. If it is a vein, you will see it on the board. If it is the pressure treatment, and not sap, you will see that fade with time and subsequent cleanings and sealings. If it is sap, you 'll know the pine smell when you scratch and sniff it. Beth
  10. Hiring Help?

Being the laborer yourself ties you to the everyday tasks. The sooner you get someone trained the better it is for you to keep growing your company. While you should stay in touch with the methods and techniques used to do the work, you should cross train always to eliminate the reliance upon any one individual (including yourself) in the event that person is not available (sick, injured, quit...) There is a saying in business that I have adopted that speaks loud to an owner: You should be working on your business and not just in the business. I had different helpers the first year but the 2nd year I started hiring people. Things were growing too fast to be the main work force and in doing so, I could not keep up with the demand we created. A lot of development needed to happen especially in the corporate structure and marketing. Nothing came pre-assembled or templated well to our business model so we had to customize nearly everything to specifications we made. Each business can be like a fingerprint and that's the beauty of it, we can make it as unique as we like. I met a gentleman a few years ago who told me that when he came full circle, he would like to go from being a big company to just him and a helper because he enjoyed the work and didn't want to separate from it. Each person is unique in their aspirations and it is up to you to grow it how you want but in the end, you have to be happy with what you create. Rod!~

  13. Beths number 1 www.seedirtrun.com

Well, I do get your point Ron, and thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately, we all start somewhere, and we either evolve or we fail. It is up to those of us who are professionals to educate the consumers. I feel there is no better way to do business than that. Beth
  14. Down Payments

We require a deposit with all booked jobs. Around here, people have been known to call in multiple people, and whoever gets there first does it, then they don't tell you they got someone else you get there, and you are out of luck. If someone wants to hire you there is nothing wrong with them having a little "skin in the game" so to speak. Beth
  15. 2007 vs 2008

Nice job Jeff! :) I hope you have a floor shot that is not blurry....I hate it when that happens. The wind has been nasty here too. Some days you just have to brush and pad the whole thing - don't dare pull the sprayer trigger even with masking. I hate that. And the rain - yuck....I think everyone is behind. Beth :cup:

  18. Bartering

It's funny....when you think back on it we all learn to barter as kids. Who hasn't traded parts of their school lunch with friends, or traded baseball cards? Bartering is a pretty fundamental negotiating skill. I would agree that someone new to business might not make the connection to use this skill, but it's certainly something worth trying and applies not just to residential and commercial work, but other areas of your business as well. You can exchange services with other businesses too. Beth :cup:
  19. Welcome back to the NEW TGS on version 3.7.0!

Seems to be a very feature loaded version. Only words of advice, make sure any hacks or add-ons you have are ready for 3.7 or you will end up with problems. Also ( this is a biggie) I know you guys have a nice skin installed. Skins are version specific. Check with the folks who designed your skin to see if they have the skin upgraded. 3.7.0 does have bugs. Photos are problematic.... Overall, 3.7 is solid. Beth
