Adam has a more powerful voice, better range and can sing just about any style music.

Both can arrange music beautifully. Both fully deserved it. But, both will be famous.

I'm into A/V as well so I can certainly appreciate a great system. What are you using for your satellites? I run a 5.1 system with Vienna Acoustics sats (Beethoven Baby Grands as the mains), twin 15" servo Velodyne's, a 5 channel Adcom (300x5) and a Anthem AV30 A/V preamp.

Well put! I totally agree with the look on Simon's face...I think the others were in shock also but covered it up a little better although Randy did look a bit surprised also...Adam had it all the way. I just think way too many tennie boppers out there were voting for Chris...

B&W 801's Ken, using the Yamaha RX V1 as a preamp for the fronts with a Luxman M 117 powering the 801's.

My subs are homemade 9.5 cu ft with long throw 15's in what is called an extended bass shelf alignment, flat down to 15hz at about 130 db!

I have bridged Pro Sound amps on them at 2500 RMS per subwoofer.

I know ALL about the Vienna Acoustics !!!

VERY Musical speakers !!

My kind of sound too, warm and musical !

My 801's are "ruthless" Ken, very revealing, intolerant of junk recordings.

The canadien Anthem is a great pre/pro !

Sonic Frontiers and Anthem are the same company.

I had a Tube Preamp from them, great company.

I respect the Velodynes, Had the SVS Ultra Cylinders Subs, a pair of them.

Wanted to build something, so I made my subs.

The look like the bass cabinets from a Klipschorn, go in the corners.

You have a VERY nice system Ken, good musicality.

I bet the Adcom and the Viennas are a good match, the speed/neutrality of the big Adcom a good match with the warmth of the Viennas ?

Dude, there aren't many freaks like us. Reading what you wrote is like good porn to me! What I like about the Adcom is the dynamic power. I could be listening at 105 dB and a Metallica crescendo with double kick drum will roar in (like towards the end of "One") and the amp won't even breath heavy. The damping is a nice match for the Vienna.. the midbass stays tight and punchy. The Adcom is a little dry for my taste, but I think all solid state amps sound that way. You know as well as I do, if you are going to listen to music, an LP played on a good turntable with tube pre and amp are the keys to nirvanna. But you are right, matched with the Viennas, the sound is damn good for what i consider a mid-fi system. It all runs from conditioned and dedicated 30 amp circuits (three of them). I had to upgrade my whole house to a 200 amp service LOL. Did i mention I like dynamics?

I had a pair of 501 Matrixes many moons ago. I never liked them in the room I had them in. They were very revealing and a bit slow on the dynamics. I've heard about the range of the 801's but have yet to get to a delaership to hear them.

What parameters (Thiele-Small, etc) did you have to get into when designing the box? what drivers did you put in?

If you ever get up this way, Chris, I'll show you my system. My TV is a Pioneer Elite that is ten years old and I have yet to find a picture I like better. Its about as close to a tube as you can get. We can cruise to my Uncle's house as well. He makes me look like a toddler. He was a sound engineer for EMI and at last check has about $400K into his system. He thinks my system, and I qoute, "sounds like a shelf system" LOL..

Yes, tubes and Analog are Sonic Nirvana, but I like Home Theatre, at the moment ....

I also own JBL S412P's, and BIG Polk SRS 2's !!!

The big Polks use the SDA technology, and will image clear outside the walls.

In the third pic, you can see a JBL L7 and one of the corner mounted subs!

The BIG speaker is a VMPS RM 40, a ribbon speaker.

I sold both of these speaker, not good enough to make the team !

The speaker by the green couch are Von Schweikert VR 4 JR's, with a tube preamp on top.

The round cylinder is an SVS Ultra Sub, replaced by the two monster subs.

And finally,, the raw drivers are 15" TC Sounds LMS 4000's.

They weigh 70 lbs EACH !

I have a pair of bridged pro amps delivering 2500 RMS into EACH of the subs.

The Bass in the Movie "The Chronicles of Riddick" will move the furniture !!

BTW, the Theil Small alignment is called an EBS alignment.

My boxes are tuned to 14 HZ.

This alignment is best for wall/corner mounted subs if you dont want BOOMY Bass ?

You get REALLY low Bass like this, but at the expense of upper bass "kick"

But the B&W woofers kick hard from 50 to 150 hz anyway.

Honestly, MOST of the time I use my JBL S412P's Ken.

The B&W Matrix 801's are just TOO revealing sometimes.

You would like the JBL S412P's.

They are warm and forgiving, like the Vienna's.

The 801's will drop your jaw, when a GOOD recording is played.

Unfortunately, I am an OLD Guy, stuck in the 70's and 80's Rock.

Much of that is not verywell recorded.

The JBLS 412P's are WAY more forgiving, and sound good on TV watching too.

They spend the most time in my system.

Except when I want to "impress" my audio snob bubbies, LOL

Then the 801's go into the system.

Yes, the Adcoms are a bit dry sounding.

I JUST sold an Adcom 585, and have owned Adcom 565 Monoblocks.

Honestly, I prefer the older Parasound stuff

John Curl, the ex Levinson designer, did a lot of old Parasound stuff, and it sounds really good.

If I were to invest in a sound system, it would be a PA system complete with amplifiers and probably a 36-48 channel sound board. Peavy Speakers with subs and stands.

Problem is...I need a garage to set it up in and blast away... hehehe.

Dan, its all about reproducing live sound without added vibrations or reflections from hard surfaces. It can get real crazy. I framed out my basement 12" OC and glued and screwed the first layer of 5/8" drywall then used Green Glue to put another layer of wallboard on top of that. I have a hodge podge of egg crate foam mattress pads on the walls and a heavy curtain where there is no window LOL.

Its like driving a flagship Lexus for the first time. If you are used to a minivan or compact car, you never know what you are missing. Once you sit behind the wheel of that Lexus, you are ruined. The same goes for audio. Once you hear the distinct sound of a singer drawing in a breath while she sings or the sound of fingers sliding up and down the fret of a guitar, its over. Its like the first hit of crack. On a good system you will here a triangle or a glockeschpiel you never knew was there. On a system with enough power and dynamic headroom a trumpet will sound like Dizzy Gillespi (sp) is blowing his horn four feet in front of you.

Chris, your equipment rocks. Nice job on those cabinets. What did you use to finish? Tuned to 15 hz? Thats a true sub, my friend. What type of crossover? Whats the cutoff point and slope? My peeve about the Velodynes is I know they are there. Maybe its just my imagination but I swear I can close my eyes, you can move them and I will still be able to point right to them. It kills the transparent point source I look for in a good sounding system.

Rod, I had Community speakers (Pa company) in my house running from a 1000x2 behemoth pro amp (QSC, i think it was). Each cabinet had 4 12's and a horn. LOL. So I can definitely relate. Are you a musician?

I use a RANE 24 db electronic crossover Ken.

I bring the subs in 80hz.

Blend is seamless in my room at that freq and cut off.

IME, for best sub blending, you need a speaker with Bass of its own.

OR, your sub crossing in too high ?

OR, too low ?

I have run a 15 hz tone through my system.

Yiou dont hear it, you feel it.

No sound at all, just pictures falling off walls, and the room groaning!

I think the slope of the Vellies is 18dB/octave) The baby grands go pretty deep for the driver size. I have them actively crossed at a high pass of 20 hz.

I've played 15 cycle tones. the sub is hammering away and you feel a little queasy but you hear nothing.

I think the slope of the Vellies is 18dB/octave) The baby grands go pretty deep for the driver size. I have them actively crossed at a high pass of 20 hz.

I've played 15 cycle tones. the sub is hammering away and you feel a little queasy but you hear nothing.

On certain crossover slopes Ken, you can get a 3 db bump AT crossover, reverse leads on viennas will eliminate 3 db bump at crossover, trey it ?

I'm not allowed to watch anymore. My son tried out in Philly a couple of years ago. It was a little bit of a sham. Thousands upon thousands show up for the first weekend. They pick 50 I think make it to the audition for Randy, Simon, and whats her name and are told to come back the next weekend. That means that those guys that are really really bad - they are told they they made it and have to foot the expense to stay in the city for the week or have to make the trip from out of town. More production than reality.

I'm a musician and consider the show mostly a big joke. It's just entertainment playing down to the masses. All that said it's still a contest. My wife watches it faithfully and I get caught up watching it myself. It is entertaining but it is a joke of a contest.

But this year they did in fact have some decent singers. Adam is probably technically one of the best singers ever in the contest. He's got serious chops and can sing like hell. But he's not mainstream enough for the masses so he lost out in the final vote.

Chris is more mainstream and is actually talented too but does not have the pipes that Adam does. He's seemingly very modest and likeable and the girls love him to pieces. In the end it's a popularity contest and Chris was the most popular among American voters.

Both Adam and Chris are winners because the show has launched high profile careers that (more than likely) neither would've had.

The entertainment business is a big mess! We miss out on the greatest talents out there while the media feeds us crap.

Yes!

Traveled in a band and played in night clubs. Not much other than that but dang was it fun!

btw, since you asked I will anticipate the next question...Drummer...12 pc set, double bass, 8 concert toms, snare and 2 floor bass drums.

Also, have a Explorer style guitar, Peavy Audition amp and a couple of foot effects.
