TNRoofCleaner 16 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 Sounds like the electrodes are out of adjustment and it is throwing in raw fuel and then igniting. I used to work on oil fired boilers and they would do the same thing.
Alexy 85 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 Clean your elecrodes if you have the 3504 series undo the elcrode leads and the diesel line at the top. There are 3 bolts you remove and the burner cone and electrodes come out as one piece look them over if they have carbon build up scrape them down and make sure thier gap is correct ( forgot this) call the 800 number on the build plate and give ser # and they will give it to you over the phone. Clean the nozzle while you are there and reassemble. Put a new filter on the unit and fire it up.
Jerry 24 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 If you call me from the field, I’m going to ask you what the fuel pressure guage says.. get one. I’ll ask what’s the running voltage of the system.. check it with a voltmeter. I’m going to ask the condition of the terminals and connections. Also, condition of fuel supply. The intermittant ignition problems are otherwise, simple adjustment issues, but.. we don't recommend the same electrode setting for pressure washers as the Burner Mfr's do.. these are NOT "residential" oil-burners.. E-mail me for a FREE instructions-diagram with our proven, reliable recommendation. You can't bank on luck... you need real practical common sense analysis. Think about HOW these things work. And communicate with your pit-crew.. Call us anytime. Dirtbuster 14 Report post Posted January 9, 2010 I had the very same problem that drove me crazy. On warm days it would work fine. On cold days just as you described. I check fuel pressure, changed the filter, and replaced the electrodes. To make a long story short, I decided to remove the coil. It was so clogged, I am surprised it worked at all. Cleaned the coil, new insulation, and reinstalled. Fired right up with no problems since.

Alexy 85 Report post Posted January 9, 2010 Post what you find I have a 3405 unit that did the same thing sporadicly. I changed the coil out that is behind the fuel pump and it cleared it up.
Jerry 24 Report post Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) Sooting of the coil, is a "burn problem".. Usually, it's as simple as an air-mixture adjustment, sometimes it's an electrode adjustment. Get a "tune-up" on your heater every 12 months, ..especially for that bouncy-trailer mounted system. E-mail me for free instructions, if you like. key-words "Burner Tune-up" If the fuel pressure is below 100psi (for diesel fuel), the dropletts in the fuel-spray, are too large to burn completely before they "slam-into" the bottom of the heater-coil, and drip into a puddle.. Sometimes you'll see unburned fuel dripping down from under the burner, but your first clue, is the sooty-fumes rising out the top of your heater as it burns, or, the white-smoke from the un-burned fuel vaporizing after the main-flame goes out. glad to help. Joe Ortiz 14 Report post Posted January 11, 2010 check your ignitor might be going bad and not sending enough spark to the fuel to burn it and then it pools up then explodes out the stack.
Tracy Handl 108 Report post Posted January 11, 2010 If this is a 12 Volt system, be sure and check your battery.
big mike 14 Report post Posted January 11, 2010 If this is a 12 Volt system, be sure and check your battery. +1. Very common problem if your battery isn't fully charged. Your burner will work, but not very efficiently.
larryh 65 Report post Posted January 11, 2010 12 VOLT BURNER SYSTEMS The 12 volt burner system must be perfectly balanced to eliminate problems. Some of the parameters are: 1. Battery 750 CCA a. The battery must stay fully charged. b. Terminals must be clean and tight. c. The battery must have a good ground. d. The ground between the battery and the entire frame must be good. 2. The charging system must charge at least 13.1 volts and a minimum of 15 amps if using a transformer with a drop out timer or 20 amps using a transformer without. 3. The engine speed is critical to maintain the charging rate. 4. The electrode settings must be exactly as set forth by the machine manufacturer. 5. Fuel pressure must be as established by the mfg. 6. The burner exhaust must not be restricted. 7. The blower motor must be maintained, brushes, bearings, etc. 8. Fuel nozzles should be changed at least twice each year. 9. Fuel filter should be changed every 2 months at a minimum. 10. Top quality fuel must be used. 11. Air band settings should only be made by qualified personnel with the correct test equipment. 12. All components of your pressure washer must be operating correctly or the burner can be affected. 13. It is advisable to use a fuel additive such as Red Devil Soot Remover. 14. Fuel tanks should be topped off each day prior to putting the unit away for the night. This is what I have learned by working with these burners since they were first used in our industry. HotShot 34 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 Here is Larry on video showing how to troubleshoot burner issues: I posted this on my website cause Larry has a way of simplifying it.
Jerry 24 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 one more "silly little thing that makes a big difference".. there is an internal filter in the fuel pump even if the primary filter is "always kept clean", you should know that moisture in the fuel eventually allows enough rust to grow inside the fuel pump, it cloggs itself ! Again, I'm reminding you GET a 0-200psi fuel pressure GUAGE ON the fuel pump, or you'll fumble with the troubleshooting, every time it goes down.
