Resusable or crimp on hose fittings?

Hi to all.

I have this question in my mind.

I was wandering what is easier to use.

Crimp on or reusable hose fittings.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Reusable screw type hose fittings!

Is there anyone who uses them successfully?

I use reusables to repair my hoses. the worst part is that I might have to put them on a couple of times TO make them work. The best indicator is if they are hot after they are fully screwed down.

What brand are you using, Scott? I use nothing but Gates. I have tried Aeroquip, Imperial Eastman, and a Chinese equivalent to the Gates, but nothing works as well.

Does it last as long as with Crimp on fittings?

I have used them form time to time but as an emergency repair only for me they just don't stay on the way I would like and I have to keep reinstalling them every once in a while. I prefer to re crimp my ends whenever I can it is just much more reliable in my work.

If they are on, they stay on. I dont have a crimping machine, and no one in this area will repair a pressure washer hose because someone sued a hose place because a repair failed.

I use the screw on/re-usable fittings for on the job & home repairs, but get the crimp on fittings done professionally for new hoses and repairs if i am in the neighbourhood of my hose supplier (a local hydraulics specialist). There has never been a problem with the screw on fittings, but they MUST be the correct ones for that hose (there can be quit a difference in OD between brands), and they are hard work to fit (I find filling the edges/corners helps, plus lots of silicone spray, and holding it in the vice) and as Scott mentioned - they are quite hot to touch because of the friction.

Tough call to make. Scott has a big business so he probably goes through so much hose that for his business it's cost effective to fix the damaged hoses.

In our case we only employ a few workers. We have a tight "little" business. I have had hoses repaired by my local distributor and I also have the screw on fittings we have used. I've been hit in the head, hand and other body parts from the fixed hoses blowing apart and so have my guys since they now do the physical work. The danger factor for my small company is just not worth it for us to "fix" broken hoses.

So what we do now is I stock pile new hoses late in the year for the tax write-offs and we use them during the next year. Safety issues are my biggest concern and us fixing hoses is just not worth the risk.
