English/Spanish

Question

OK let the debate begin!!!!!!!!!

Whats up and why is everything that you see turning to 2 languages.

I as the racist I must be, can't stand the fact that everywhere you go its English & spanish signs, notices etc etc

I go to the ATM I have to hit a button that says english. I really hate how Lowes & HD now have everything in english & spanish. I cant stand when I go to read a box of diapers or must products at a supermarket, I have to look for the english side of the package. I hate that I went in a new little neighborhood mexican restaurant and the whole menu was in spanish, NO english at all. I hate when i go to Walmart and other places I hear more spanish being spoken.

The list goes on and on

Why is this, theres no othe immigrant groups over time that had their language posted on everything

I feel if you come to this country to live & work you should make every effort possible to learn, read & write the english language. I think why I get so pissed is years ago I worked with many spanish people and all of them, I think were legal and they all knew how to speak & write english real well. But now we have sooooooooooo many illegals here they dont even try to learn the language at all or much

Lowes down the road from me started doing announcements in both english & spanish. It lasted about 2 weeks and they got so many complaints from Racist customers and the workers that they went back to only english announcements... Yay give one to the Americans

I think if you live and work and go to school learn the language and thats it. America love it or leave it and respect it by reading & writing it

Just my opinion

Jeff

Well-said ScottK. And Jon, you'd actually be defined as a "commie-kraut".:)

Or a Commie , hungry for sauerkraut

Back to the origanal post, I hope the Gov does crack down with the heavy fines and we all then will pay more now, but possibly not later

There is probably more of a chance that they make us learn Spanish before they make the mexicans learn English.

I have a buddy whom is a pharmacist and pharmacy owner. He just lost a $250,000 a year account with a local medical facility to one of the big chain pharmacies because he refused to hire a Spanish speaking pharmacist. Now that may seem a little bull headed and may not be the best business move but I applaud him for standing up for what he believes in. If you don't speaka English you no belong here.

"They dont have to charge the same rates, they can afford to low ball us right out of business, Because there cost of living is less than ours, they live 2, 3, 4 famlies in one trailer home" ~ Quote from Jeff

Pretty interesting thread....this topic came up about a year or two ago on the TGS ~ I am sure my buddy Jon in NM remembers!

I am all for ensuring that people enter into this country legally...no matter what nationality you are. I was born and raised here. Served in the military honorably. Both my brother and sister both have college degrees (I was the blacksheep of the family)

My father was from Mexico and entered into this country the correct way. Once permitted to be here he worked his tail off so that we could have a better life in this great land.

I don't remember having to live in trailer though...I do remember having to spend a summer at my Aunt's house in San Diego once when I was little - which was hell - but no trailer! LOL

My mother was caucasion but spoke fluent Spanish. At home the language that was spoken was English. My father made us speak English to the point that I had to take Spanish in H.S. ~ I almost flunked ~ my spanish teacher said I was all messed up LOL - he gave me a C- because he felt bad for me!! I am serious ... I can't speak Spanish ~ well a little bit now!

Any worker that works for our company that can't speak English is required to attend English speaking classes 3 evenings a week at our local community college. My company pays for this at no charge to our worker.

On the job site English is the primary language with flexibility for those that are attending English speaking classes!

I celebrate my Mexican heritage as I know what my father had to endure to raise us the best way that he could.

I would not anticpate any one race to take over the power washing industry as Jeff eluded to.

There will be 'pros and cons' about this subject until the cows go home. Does this mean that everybody that comes across our borders illegally is bad...I think not. Our govt. should do more to protect our borders!

Enjoy!

I have to reload my laptop because I fried the hard drive last week and didn't have the laptop backed up. Lost all pictures..everything. One of the pictures I have to put back in there is the one where I was at a Republican Dinner with a few big wigs and one of them being a guy I like a hell of alot. Peter King. Just after this dinner about a week later they passed his bill to build that border wall to keep the illegals out. Personally I don't know if thats the answer.

Here's a few thoughts. Canada speaks two main Languages, French Canadian and English and look how peacefull that country is.

This one is radical. How bout we let Mexico become a U.S state. This would make us the largest country in the world most likely and since these Mexicans work so hard this would solve many many problems and also now at the tip of southern Mexico is a much smaller border to protect.

Radical solution and maybe crazy but I never heard this ever mentioned anywhere. Oh by the way I've been to a few places in Mexico that where absolutely beautiful.

Ok, that is thinking out of the box to let Mexico become a state, but my thoughts are, don't we have enough corruption in gov't to contend with on our own front? I liken Mexico becoming a state to Iraq taking on democracy. There are some things that just don't fit. It's just my opinion but I like Johns way of thinking. Funny, it kinda goes along the lines of if you can't beat em, join em...so to speak. lol

Carlos I applaud your family and how your Dad handled things. It is sort of what I was getting at, if we just allow any nationality/culture/race to come here and not assimilate into the country then its not making our country stronger. Hope I didnt offend you with many of my comments on your mexican heritage. I just think somethings broken and needs some fixing or at least a good tune-up

John T,

Off subject, but FWIW, I've been around you on these boards for about 7 yrs now, you're a straight-up guy, don't hide behind agendas, and are a super-positive force in pwashing, for which I applaud you. I kinda wish you didn't have to wear so many darn hats, and I wish you didn't have to keep so many different people pleased. I think that sucks for you, but that's my opinion, through my eyes. Just wanted to throw that out---your name gets lumped in with other names a lot, in a negative connotation, and I think you get a raw deal. Nuf said, my opinion only.

That is an AWESOME idea about Mexico!! Not sure if I like it or not, or agree with it, I'd have to analyze/consider/weigh it, but it's a fabulous idea. Heck, we wouldn't even have to guard a border.....they do a FINE job of that!! (don't like south americans) Rod was worried about the corruption,etc.....well, we could just leave Mexico kinda like one giant "Las Vegas".....anything goes! Very interesting, creative idea.

I'm not saying that we should't learn other languages....I used to be fluent in French, started learning Japanese while living in Okinawa (where by the way I taught ESL), my kids were taught spanish in school.

I think what a lot of this boils down to is that WE Americans are making all of the effort and concessions....we are learning their languages, we are re-packaging, we are footing the bills for the illegals....at some point why don't WE as a country just put our foot down and tell them, come on over BUT do it legally and learn to communicate in a language that yours HOSTS are comfortable with!!!!!!

Celeste

That just about sums it up perfectly!

A los cocineros y otros en los Taco Bells alreadedor de Denver, a city in which Spanish is now the majority language in the public school system, and where one could not do kec at night if one were unable to speak Spanish:

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the

casa,

not a creature was stirring, caramba que pasa? The stockings were hanging con mucho cuidado,

in hopes that St Nicholas will feel obligado,

to leave a few cosas aqui y alli,

for chico y chica (something por me?).

Los ninos are snuggled all safe in their camas,

some in camisas and some in pijamas.

Their little cabazas are full of good things,

todos esperan que Santa will bring.

Santa is down at the corner saloon,

muy borracho since mid-afternoon.

Mama is sitting beside la ventana,

shining her rolling pin para manana.

When Santa will come in un manera extrano,

lit up like a star on the mountain cantando.

Si' mama lo manda to bed with a right,

Merry Christmas a todos y a todos good night.

Feliz Navidad Amigos!

Did I say I would not post here again, if so I LIED.

Carlos you have a good memory, yes it was about 2 years ago this was hashed out and it comes back every few years, probably because more English speaking people are hearing and seeing those that speak other languages speak it in public. It is not just Spanish people speak, it is just that since most illegals come though Mexico we, yes WE assume all of them are Mexican and that is not true.

I even recall Carlos talking abut how his dad said English is the spoken language in their home. Heck I had to learn German as my Grandmother would not speak English to me, she knew it perfectly but wanted me to learn German.

" Or a Commie , hungry for sauerkraut" ah so true, so true, well the part about hungry for sauerkraut is, love it and if made the old country way all the better. Bush's (not our President) company makes one called Bavarian Style which I have found to be a favorite of mine. Hebrew national makes one too but just not as good.

Just remember one thing folks and that is the USA is made up of so many people from so many countries yet we are still proud to call ourselves AMERICANS regardless of your race, nationality or religion.

And I for one am proud to call you guys n gals friends even though I have met but a few of you in person. Now Carlos is going to have to plan a trip down my way so we can just sit in the yard sipping Ice Tea.

Jeff no offense taken on my end bud and no need to apologize! We are good to go! This is a dicey subject and I consider everyone's opinion.

Jon, heading to NM sure does sound nice and sitting in the yard sipping tea is even better. Both of us are deaf so we should have a hell of conversation!

Our next big trip will be after March sometime....who knows I may let you know I am in town!!

here is what is f&(*) up. this is why I think spanish speakers should learn english. if you don't know already i spray alot of acid. its messed up when i have to take a label off of a pail and hand to these guys on a job so they don't decide to wash there hands with it or walk under it as I am spraying. Safety factor here. it would also be messed up if they got it in there eye and then went to the dr. and could not tell them what was in their eye because they don't speak english. i am not worried about the immigrants pricing because what i have found is that the good ones are charging the same as americans.

Given the propensity of our socialist-leaning government leaders, I vehemently oppose making Mexico another country. WIth the income redistribution that takes place in this country, I can imagine the effort that would take place to bring all Mexicans up from poverty conditions at the cost to the producers in our current society. It's bad enough here how we coddle our poor and lazy with reckless abandon.

WOW!!!!

This is a subject that first I want to say I’m for English only because it’s what I speak.

But if someone or a private company wants to cater to Spanish speaking people then please allow them. Its America……….

If a legal American or immigrant wants to speak only Spanish, let them, its America.

I could careless if Americans want to speak languages other than English even if its there primary or only spoken language.

In some regards if you say I must speak Spanish and you’re asking the government to make this another law. What’s next???????? The primary religion will be catholic since most Americans are catholic?

We all know it’s a disadvantage and is costing tax dollars for duplicating everything in different languages. This is a political issue. Not Spanish as being a primary language. It’s your right to choose the language you wish to teach and speak in your home and your community. The ramifications of not learning are also your right.

Each potential Mexican person would now be tax payers need a car TV DVD and housing.

Next as Americans we are never going to allow Mexico to be a state until we have strip and prostituted the country for our own resources. We keep Mexico in poverty intentionally. NAFTA, No immigration reform, and the list go on. Fence across the border to keep drugs out or Mexicans?

Well I simply think we keep Mexico in poverty period for our own reasons. Immigrations reform would cure most of this.

We simply have made getting into this country legally impossible.

I wonder if my grandfathers would have come this way if the option of legal was gone. I hope!

ron the car tv & dvd would probably come from china, leaving only housing coming from the U.S. which it would probably be built with immigrant labor and imported material?

You know if you want a leg up on your competition and instead of debating that everyone should know the english language that live here because no matter what there aint squat us powerwasher can do about that...Here's another thought...LEARN SPANISH. I just hired two spanish speaking guys who speak very little english. I used them for the last 2-3 weeks of my season here... Man they can work. Anyway the light bulb went off in my head(Yea I know it was only a 40 watt bulb:) and I just ordered and recieved a few CD's on how to learn spanish in 30 days(Yea right).

The messed up thing with me is since I am multi cultural(The american way) my grand mother was from Spain and she spoke spanish fluently. Today she is 92 and still looks great. She always told me as a kid "Johnny you should learn spanish" so what do I do?? I take it up in high school and had like a 14 average in it(A total disgrace) then I get caught cheating off the brain in my school and she stands up and tells the teacher that I'm looking at her paper. End result I get another ZERO and then I had to drop the class. I never failed a class in High School but I did drop one...SPANISH.

Hey Jon thanks for the compliments. I have a Powerwasher friend who just called me today and who's from the midwest and was a past PWNA BOD and he said to me that I take on way to much.. He's right. I just have a hard time to say no to people that count on me. Just yesterday I flew to atlanta just for a couple of hours to meet some friends and talk business and Wed. right after x-mas I'll be flying into VA for 4 hrs to meet some more contacts and talk shop and then fly back and go to work.. My Doctor does tell me that something has to give with me. I just need to work and not sleep for just another 18 months then I'll be good to go like alot of you guys here..Just 18 more months...only 18 more months..just 18 more months of minimal sleep..justzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I grew up in a community that spoke spanish and didn't learn much of it. I didn't have to. Everyone spoke english as a rule in public. The one regret I had was the conversations that took place in spanish that I was not allowed to understand. Kids can be pretty mean. None the less, I remained ignorant of the opportunity I had to learn it in school and now I am seeing it.
