CLASSICPW 14 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 One of my small backup washers(honda engine/4.0 cat pump) will run for 10 minutes then die for no reason. It'll start right back up and run for 10 min then die. I'm pretty good with repairs, but this has me stumped.
Tracy Handl 108 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 Could be the filter inside of the gas tank.
Pat Norman 18 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 I know I bet. Mine was doing same thing. Mine was pulling a vacuum on the fuel tank and starving the carb. See if when you take off the fuel cap you hear a whoosh. If so do what I did and drill a tiny new vent hole in the cap.
Russ Johnson 141 Report post Posted March 2, 2010 Double check your oil level. The splashing around in the engine may be pulling oil away from the switch. As Tracy said, could be the filter. As Pat said, the cap may be defective, but go buy a new cap.
big mike 14 Report post Posted March 3, 2010 Double check your oil level. I was going to mention this as well. Most often this is the cause of "mysterious" engine shutdown.
Paul Kassander 26 Report post Posted March 3, 2010 Honda...I would start with the fuel cap as well I have seen that fairly frequently
CLASSICPW 14 Report post Posted March 3, 2010 Shoot, it had too much oil in it, I guess that would cause it to shut down.
Jerry 24 Report post Posted March 8, 2010 Uh -Oh.. what are the chances you actually over-filled it without realizing !?? usually, when the oil level is found high.. it also smells like gasoline.. that's real bad.. diluted oil does NOT lubricate as well, the engine runs hot, then can overheat, and even sieze. ALWAYS turn OFF your fuel, when the system is not in use.. the float-valve can over-flow the carb, running down the throat of the engine, around the rings, and into the oil-bath. Another failure, is ignition module overheat, or low-oil-module over-heating. ..not likely this time of year, unless maybe the oil is diluted.
Rick2 42 Report post Posted March 9, 2010 Run it with the gas cap loose and see what happens. Sounds like a vacuum to me.
