All education is important
It occurs to me that it has been a while since I climbed onto my proverbial soap box to share my thoughts on a topic. Well' date=' spring is just about here, or at least it feels like it in many regions. This is the time of year when we begin to plan, and it is the time of year when many companies pick up a wand for the first time. For any business owner, new or seasoned, selecting your professional education should be something that is budgeted for both in terms of time and money. There are many opinions out there as to what kind of education is best, and from what source. There are pro-association or pro-organization folks, and also those who find that for their own use, it is not a good investment. There are many manufacturer courses, to show you how to successfully use a product. The goal is simple, they sell product, you sell jobs. It's a win win. There are distributors who hold wonderful annual events in different parts of the country, and there are contractors who do the same thing. And of course there are companies who bundle together classes teaching certain topics who are perhaps affiliated with one or more of the above but who are focused on selling course work. Let me be clear; ALL EDUCATION IS GOOD. All of it has value. One company's choice and opinion as to what will work for them is based upon that company's needs and objectives. As business owners, each of us must evaluate the services we plan to offer, and the needs of our business. We must decide for ourselves what to spend our budget on. Compare before you spend. Some of the courses out there are similar in design and content. Before you spend your hard earned education budget on class, consider the content. Look at the competing education at products. are some closer to home? Are some part of an organization? Would the credentials of an association membership give you a competitive market advantage? Should you get the training at a round table, at a convention or simply in a class offered by an education company?
Once upon a time, our business was new. At that time, we did not have what seems like dozens of forums with lots of data just waiting to be searched by a user and browsed as time permits. And back in that day, we chose to go to a PWNA convention. There was no other org, and the classes were offered that we had a personal interest in. So we went. We learned and we networked and we made decisions that moved us forward. It worked for us, because we aligned our goals and needs with what was offered to us.
Are the classes enough? Ummmm....hell no. You will not ever get everything out of any of these classes. I do not care who the instructor is, or how many years they have been at it. You cannot impart in just a few short hours or days, enough knowledge to fill your head with all you need, and it is not matched with what you gain over time as you learn and grow. You will read magazines, you will find articles, you will search the forums. As you do these things you will discover your likes and dislikes, and you will tailor your business around your own points of interest and strength, or at least, that is my advice to you.
Never, ever stop learning.

Where has customer service gone?
In today's ever changing business world. Businesses need to adapt, improvise and educate or they will be left in the dust. Is customer service a necessity for stability or can it be drowned out by low prices that undercut the competition?
Recently, I started doing business with a well known pressure washing website retailer. The retailer is envirospec which is operated by John Allison. While shopping for my expanding pressure washing business I noticed that envirospec had great prices when compared to its competitors. I did some superficial checking on the web to see if they were reputable and found nothing that jumped out to me, negatively speaking. So, I thought I would give them a shot. In my first order I ordered a hot water pressure washer and other accessories that totaled, all together, about $5000. The pressure washer and accessories ordered arrived in a timely manner, but from there onward customer service from envirospec and John Allison was extremely negative.
To start with - the pressure washer would consistantly shut down after a few hours of operation and trying to get a hold of someone to help at envirospec was like pulling teeth. I would call and call, and would either get no answer or if I did get a human being they would take my phone number down and tell me someone would get back to me in the next day or two. But guess what? No phone calls. So I would call again. This repeated itself over and over.
The same thing occurred when I asked for paperwork, or parts list, for the pressure washer, so I could maintain it and order parts. I received a Kohler manual for the motor and that was it. No other paperwork was given on the pump, gear reducer or water heater - nothing. So, I tried getting that information. Same thing - "I will have someone get back to you by tomorrow," the lady on the phone would tell me. Guess what? Never a phone call.
By this point, as a business owner, I am frustrated and angry. So, I figure I am going to take this issue to the president of envirospec, John Allison, and get things handled. But guess what? He sends me an email saying that all pressure washers sold today "don't come with paper work" and that I am incompetent at maintaining a pressure washer and he recommends that I have my pressure washer serviced by a professional - instead of me. So hold on, I have three other pressure washers, purchased locally, that came with complete manuals. Paperwork on the motor, pump, gear reducer, water heater, maintenance schedule and so, that I do all of the work on, and John tells me that I can't do the work and pressure washers don't come with a parts list or manual. I could not believe how rude his email was to me - I was shocked. Needless to say, I will never be doing business with envirospec again.
With good reason, I am really angry now, but you know what? There is not a thing I can do about it.... but tell anyone that reads this blog so that they don't have to go through the same thing that I went through at envirospec.
How does a website retailer stay in business for so long with poor customer service? I guess cut throat pricing can work in today's society. After all, if a business keeps selling and offers horrible customer service, pricing must be the driving force???

Commercial Pressure Washing Fl!
Fairfield Inn Hotel Commercial Pressure Washing Florida!
Fairfield Inn Pressure Washing Florida!
This was a Commercial Building Wash that we completed for a Fairfield Inn, in Plant City Florida on Thursday before the National Cleaning Expo.
The Property Manager for the Hotel had called us a few weeks prior and was taking bids for this Cleaning. One of the main reasons that they hired us was because we use a Non Pressure Soft Wash Method on all of our Building Washes. They were very concerned about damage, as the building is made of Drivit. Another reason was the fact that we assured them that the job would be completed in one day without the use of a lift bucket. Other potential bidders had told them that they would need a lift bucket and that the job would take 3-4 days to complete which was going to be a huge inconvenience to the Hotel and their guests.
Along with the Building we also Pressure Washed their Pavered Pool Deck area and all the Patio Furniture, their Dumpster Pad and the Pavered Drive up area at the front entrance to the Hotel. We used 4 people and completed the entire job in 5hrs. Here are a few pictures of that job.

The Importance of GOOD Customer Testimonials
Customer testimonials are quite possibly your most valuable resource in terms of what people see when they find your business. They could be reviews through Google, Yelp, or any of the like. A positive customer review (or better yet several or more) can make the difference between a new customer booking a job with you or turning them away to give their business elsewhere.
The only problem with testimonials and reviews on these free websites is the fact that unless you know the person and can substantially validate that they posted the review, ANYONE could have written it. There are also many potential customers out that are well aware of this fact. You can't trust everything you read on the web and testimonials, even ones that appear completely legitimate on the surface CAN be illegitimate. This is why it is better if you post reviews that you yourself have reached out and attained on your website, and base them on your website rather than link them to the website of the review.
In these reviews you should get the customer's full name, location, and even a date. These facts will help make them much more real and much more believable than a foreign linked testimonial. You could even add a customer picture...obviously all these facts rely on some customer disclosure but nothing a good evangelist customer shouldn't be willing to do. Not to mention it creates great and useful content for people to see on your webpage without having to rely on a link to get your customer to your review or get the review to your site. One good believable testimonial could boost your conversion rates by 100% or more, and it doesn't even have to be incredibly in-depth. Sometimes a more concise, modest review, can be more beneficial and believable to potential customers than an over-the-top one. The more honest it sounds the better.
Know the difference between a good customer testimonial, and a GOOD, valid customer testimonial and why they are more advantageous than one from a third-party source.

Boone Under Pressure & the DIY homeowner...
Boone Under Pressure is here to help...
Welcome to the 1st blog for Boone Under Pressure in 2011. We've hit the ground running&have already scheduled a few free estimates&consultations; for local homeowners. Spring is the time of year when the "honey do" list comes out of the shed & things get busy outside your home. Sometimes you wonder if things will ever get done or you pick & choose the projects you're looking forward to. Some seem to be more fun & exciting than others. I know my favorite time to mow my grass is, the first time & the last time. The rest of the time in the yard is, well, work. Look around, how many decks do you see that have turned a beautiful shade of dark gray or a gorgeous translucent moldy slippery green ? They are everywhere. These are the projects that homeowners have neglected (or put on the bottom of the list) wishing that overnight, somehow they would return to a lovely shade of natural yellow wood, or better yet, a warm honey gold luster that beads water when it rains.
For those of you that are considering cleaning or restoring your wood deck for the first time, this may help you determine whether it's going to be a blast, literally, or it's going to be work. For those that HAVE done this before, then you know IT IS going to be work. How much depends on your project. I have actually cleaned & restored decks for homeowners that OWN a working pressure washer. They just didn't want to do it again. Someone once told me that we have 2 kinds of fear: 1) a fear of the unknown, & 2) a fear of the known. It's true. And then you ask yourself, how hard can this pressure washing process be to get my deck clean? I'll rent a pressure washer, get a jug of some "deck wash" & hook up the hose. Done. Not so fast Happy Homeowner. There are about 5-6 other things (tools/materials) you're going to need to help make this a speedy process. Perhaps more, depending on the size what you're trying to accomplish with your little project.
You can rent a pressure washer for about $45 a half day & $60 for a full day, which doesn't include tax, gas surcharge or insurance. I checked. Now you gotta go get it, get your project done in a day & then haul it back. Sounds pretty easy huh? Should have been thinking about all the in between stuff that you needed or didn't have to finish the job (in 1 day or now add another half day charge). How much over priced, water based sodium hypochlorite & sodium hydroxide cleaner mixed with a dash of surfactant do I need? Why didn't that old failing stain come off? Back to the "big box" store for something else. What happened to my wood deck? Why did some of the wood splinter & how come it looks "furry"? Do you have a good orbital sander? Good knees & a strong back will help too. What kind of grit do I need for the sander to get the prep done right? Will this step be important so my stain or sealer soaks in? Stain or sealer? What's the difference? I have talked with numerous homeowners that didn't know & were told by others to use a nationally advertised product which, in my opinion as well as numerous other contractors, is about the worst thing you can put on a deck. You will probably not be happy with the results of all your hard work. Know what it is? OK, back to work.
I think I have the right tip (see picture below) but do I know the right technique to get this done, in 1 day? Oh, look at all those little pickets, dear. There must be 100's of them. Have fun, I'm going to go play golf! Maybe playing with a rather large water pistol all day sounds like fun to some, for others there can be many headaches along the way. Some can be irreversible without shelling out more money & spending the time to do it right the second time. You will probably get wet (3-4 hours of having wet feet is NOT fun or comfortable) & your back will probaly hurt like crazy the next day(s), but hey, you saved a few bucks doing this yourself.
Wrong tip, wrong technique, wrong cleaner, wrong contractor. This homeowner called me after another contractor had started on her deck. She said "something doesn't look right on my deck". OUCH!!
For those that have done your own decks & tried pressure washing, some of you will understand this. Pressure washing is NOT about pressure. You don't just blast the dirt off your deck. Others will have to experience it first hand. Some people know how or want to do this, others call me. Boone Under Pressure has cleaned some of the dirtiest decks in The High Country in the past 5 years. About 60% of my business has been from people I never personnally met, but were impressed with my daily updates & pictures sent as work progressed.
With a long list of Happy Homeowners (references) & an extensive collection of before/after pictures, Boone Under Pressure can help you. Part of the process is to explain the process & educate each homeowner as to what needs to be done for a particular job. Decks, cabins, fencing, vinyl siding & more. If Boone Under Pressure can clean or restore it, we'll be happy to give you a free estimate. If we can't do what you want, we'll tell you that too. Your deck, in most cases, can usually be cleaned or restored back to 90-95% of it's original condition. Maybe more, maybe less depending on how long it's been since you've given your deck some love.
If you have good water pressure, an outside electrical outlet & little or no desire to take on your deck, call Boone Under Pressure for your cleaning or property needs. If you have questions & still want to DIY, feel free to call. Boone Under Pressure has NEVER or will NEVER, ask for any money upfront. No payment until your work has been completed to your satisfaction & expectations.
Boone Under Pressure offers a professional, affordable & dependable service to homeowners, Realtors & those with either income or rental property. ASU Alumni too. Please feel free to call David & schedule a free estimate & consultation. Work done around your house, work done around your schedule.
Your business is appreciated & your home respected.
